"Oh, yeah, that's fine. I don't have a preference." Wuxian said with a nod. Of course he was vegetarian. Why wouldn't their food preferences be just as different as in their previous life? Wuxian liked meat with most of his meals, and liked foods extra spicy. Regardless, he'd find something he liked at either cafeteria, so going to the one Wangji preferred was a non-issue.
"Oh, Ze-" He paused, catching himself before he said Zewu-Jun, realizing Wangji hadn't mentioned his brothers name and that that probably wasn't it, considering Wangji hadn't mentioned the name Hangguang-Jun at all when introducing himself. "Your brother would be beneficial to us in that case, it seems." He said, not covering what he was about to say very well, but hoping Wangji dismissed it.
"I think advertising... possibly on the school forums or like... in the library would also help us to reach people who aren't affiliated with the music department and don't go to the student lounge." He paused, tapping his head and rolling his eyes. "Oh duh. In the international dorms." He said simply.

Lan Wangji listened to Wei Wuxian ramble, thinking it was comforting how similar Wei Wuxian's speaking rhythms were between lives. He interjected, "The dorms in general might be."
An idea struck him then, that he should probably ask before he assumed. Wei Wuxian had a Chinese name, and played dizi, so it seemed likely, but he asked anyhow, "Do you speak Chinese? I realized I should not assume and just start speaking it to you."
He was relieved that Wei Wuxian was willing to go to his preferred dining hall, and he led them on the most efficient path there. He hoped that Wei Wuxian was still good at being the one to guide conversations because in large part, Lan Wangji just sort of wanted to listen to him and watch him, and he did not entirely know what to actually say to him.

Wuxian nodded, relieved Wangji didn't seem to catch his near-slip-up. "Yeah, the dorms in general is a good idea. Each one has like.. a thing to post flyers. We just have to make a flyer interesting enough to get the attention of people who usually don't pay attention to the boards. Bulletin board was the word I was looking for."
He paused for a beat before nodding, "Mmhmm, I do. Though my brother says my pronunciation is bad. But I'm really not great at reading or writing it. I spent some time with a foster family that... honestly I should have told the courts about but I was like seven so I didn't know any better - anyway, they discouraged me practicing Chinese and so I spent about three years not speaking or studying it and forgot a lot of it before I was put into my current family's custody."
He sucked in a breath as if he just thought of something, tapping his cheek as he rested his hand under his chin and looking off into the distance. "I could advertise at work, too. For the Chinese Ensemble, I mean. We could write it in both languages too, to reach more people."

Lan Wangji nodded tightly, trying to not show the level of incandescent fury for young Wei Wuxian that he felt at the description of the situation. He said voice carefully controlled and not sure if he was saying the right thing, "I am sorry that you had to deal with that."
He bit the insides of his cheeks, trying to reestablish his internal equilibrium and remind himself that it was a long time ago, not that Wei Wuxian had particularly good luck with any family in the iterations of his life. He said softly, tone closer to normal again, "Would you prefer if I used one more than the other? I am fairly facile at switching between the two."
He nodded at Wei Wuxian's ideas for posters and said, "I am not good at designing such things, but I would be happy to translate text into Chinese as needed."

Wuxian shrugged nonchalantly at Wangji's comment. It was in the past now, he couldn't change it, or at least he'd continue telling himself that until he fully believed it. It made coping with his past life easier. "According to my uncle, if my parents had made an official guardianship document the foster family could have been avoided all together, but that is not something that can be changed retroactively, for more reasons than one." He said simply, his voice equally as nonchalant.
He shook his head, "I don't have a preference. In fact, jiejie laughs at me because I tend to respond in the language presented to me, apparently. It is a thing I don't notice I do."
He nodded, an excited bounce forming in his step, "I like drawing! And my friend is good at art - he's the one that made the fan I hung up over my bed before we left the room, so anything I can't do, he probably can." He paused, going back to walking normally and gave Wangji a small smile, "And I would appreciate the translating services."

Lan Wangji could tell that Wei Wuxian wanted to let it slide, to move on to different topics, and he respected that. For all that he felt an immediate sense of closeness and wanting to know more because of their past life connections, he had to remind himself again that he did not know Wei Wuxian in this life. At least not yet.
He said softly, "Then I will use the one that makes sense at the time and attempt to avoid confusing you in situations where you might be getting multiple linguistic inputs. I am happy to help with Chinese if it is needed at times."
He found himself curious, wondering if Wei Wuxian had his same family, and asked tentatively, "You have siblings?"

Wuxian grinned and nodded, "Sounds good." He always found it interesting how he could have his past memories and still be only mostly fluent in Chinese, though to be fair, regaining his memories did help to speed up his re-learning Chinese. Though he supposed it was a similar thing to his memory issues - how he could sometimes remember something he did hundreds of years ago, but not that morning. Brains were interesting.
He nodded again, "Yeah, when I joined the family, I gained an older sister and younger brother. I love them, but my brother and I fight a lot." He looked to Wangji, curious if he had the same family as well. "You just have your older brother?"

Lan Wangji nodded at Wei Wuxian's explanation. It seemed like he had his family again, which seemed good. Family had always been important to Wei Wuxian.
He pondered how to answer Wei Wuxian's question about siblings. Finally he said, "I have an older brother who is my only actual sibling, but one of my younger cousins lives with us and is effectively a younger brother as well. Well, he is now also a student at Stanford, and in the dorms, but we share a home."
He was very protective and fond of Jingyi, though it definitely was strange to be closer to Jingyi than A-Yuan this time around. He suspected that several years of living with his cousin's chaotic nature would probably make him more prepared for the chaos that Wei Wuxian was sure to bring with him.

Wuxian wondered for a moment if Wangji was talking about Sizhui, and stopped himself from reacting, though only just barely. "Oh... Interesting." He said, his voice a bit shaky. He had to remind himself there had been other Lan disciples besides Sizhui. Jingyi, for example. And many more of which he didn't learn the names of (though really, he probably should've by the end of that life). "How old is your cousin?" He asked, only half curious. He didn't know how to ask for his cousins name without it coming off as strange, but was very curious if he was talking about Sizhui, Jingyi, or someone else all together. Not that knowing his age would help.

A tiny smile made its way onto Lan Wangji's face talking about his cousin, "Jingyi is sixteen, but he is a freshman here."
He had watched out for Jingyi quite a bit when his cousin had first come to the US, and he had a soft spot for the younger boy. He had done his best to keep Jingyi out of trouble with his uncle when possible, and he was always surprised in any life how much Jingyi seemed to look up to him. It had been a little less strange when Jingyi was the same age as his adopted son versus a reasonable age for a younger brother though.
Wei Wuxian had always cared very deeply about his siblings, and Lan Wangji redirected the conversation to that, "Are you brother and sister in the area?"

"Ah, wow, he must be really smart!" Wuxian praised, trying to hide his disappointment that it wasn't Sizhui. He felt like he should have run into the kid by now; everyone else from his past life had showed up around the same time, besides Lan Zhan, so he always wondered why A-Yuan was nowhere to be found. Though if Jingyi was already 16, maybe he hadn't even been looking in the right age bracket.
He nodded, resting his hands behind his head as he looked up towards the sky. "Yeah, my family lives in San Jose, and my brother also goes to school here. My sister lives with her fiance in Los Altos though." He said, growling the word fiance. He was pretty sure he could be reincarnated a million times and he'd always hate Jin Zixuan. He changed the subject slightly, letting out a laugh, "My brother avoids me on campus as much as he can. I have to get jiejie to come visit campus before he'll agree to spend any time with me. He also lives in the dorms and yet..." He faded off, feigning hurt. He didn't care, not really. He was fine with letting Jiang Cheng live his own life if he wanted.

Lan Wangji nodded and said, "He is indeed very smart and works very hard, though he is often more impulsive than does his intelligence credit."
Lan Wangji felt a small smile form on his face as Wei Wuxian talked about his family. He said, "I mostly meet with my family at home on Satuday afternoons and evenings. Home is very close to campus because my Uncle is a professor."
He hoped that Wei Wuxian had never had Uncle as a professor. He suspected that they would still rub each other the wrong way.

Wuxian let out a short laugh, "that sounds like... a teenager." He said, quickly altering his words. You. Don't. Know. The. Lan. Clan. In. This. Life. He thought to himself sternly.
"Huh, that's nice." He mused absent-mindedly. He hoped he never came across Lan Qiren's class. Just the thought of it made him tired and bored. "What's he teach?" He asked, hoping it wasn't something he was lined up to take. He wondered what his rating was on Rate My Professor. He would guess it was low, but people sometimes surprised him on the site. And who knew - maybe Wangji's uncle actually found a sense of humor in this life (though he doubted it).

Lan Wangji sighed and said fondly, "Jingyi is reckless enough for several teenagers at times. He is made worse about it by generally being good enough at things to get away with it."
He was somehow a little bit surprised when Wei Wuxian asked about what Uncle taught. He replied readily enough, "He is a philosophy professor. He mostly teaches upper level philosophy courses centered around philosophical and religious traditions in China, comparative philosophy, and the intersections between philosophy, psychology, and traditional medicines."
Lan Wangji actually found some of Uncle's classes interesting in theory, but he did not want to take courses directly from his Uncle and have to face having him as a teacher and how his classmates might react. It wasn't like he couldn't just follow along with Uncle's classes privately.

Wuxian laughed but let the subject of Jingyi drop before he said something he shouldn't. "Fascinating." He said, exaggerating the word. Though he meant it, he just knew based off the topics alone Lan Qiren was probably just as boring as he had been back at Cloud Recesses. Which was a shame, honestly, because those topics actually sounded interesting. "I don't think philosophy is on my list of courses I need to take, but I'll keep that in mind." He said simply. He'd have to look at the course list to figure out if any of them actually looked interesting enough for him to sign up, as he was pretty sure there were a couple philosophy courses that overlapped just enough to count as credits for some upcoming classes. At worst, the two hour nap would be a nice break, or maybe he'd be able to actually get some drawing time in his day again.
