((Note: Takes place late December 2019)) Lan Wangji had gotten the notice that he was getting a new roommate today when he had done his daily check of his mail before breakfast. He had known that it was a possibility that he would be assigned a roommate during this quarter, but he had been enjoying having his double to himself. It was peaceful, and he did not have to deal with anyone else with a conflicting schedule. He had done well with his previous roommate, a serious and quiet Chinese exchange student who had been grateful to be able to ask him about things in Chinese as needed, but it had been a relief when his former roommate's exchange term had ended.
Once he was done with classes for the day, he found himself anxiously trying to rearrange things in the dorm room to make it even tidier than it already was so that nothing would be in his new roommate's way. He wondered what the other student would be like, and how well or poorly they would end up getting along. He just hoped that whoever it was would not end up being too loud.

Wei Wuxian was happy to finally been granted the switch to another dorm. His (thankfully) now-previous roommate was nosy, annoying, and also liked to bring his girlfriend over what seemed like every night despite Wuxian asking him not to, and he was also about 60% sure the guy was racist. Although he tried to get information about his roommate, the staff wouldn't tell him anything, and so now he was going to get to find out. Luckily he didn't have much that he kept in his dorms since the Jiang family lived close enough that if he needed anything it would only take a few hours out of his day, so two suitcases plus his backpack covered everything he had in his previous dorm.
He stood outside the door, fumbling around for the key for a moment before opening the door. "Uh, hi. I guess I'm your new roommate." He told the person before really processing why he looked vaguely familiar. He continued speaking, though more hesitantly, "I'm Wuxian."

Lan Wangji looked up quickly, startling a little bit, when the door opened. He tried his best to give a tentative smile to the other young man, but he was fairly certain that his face remained closer to impassive than he would have preferred. His eyes traced over the other man's face, as he heard his name, and Lan Wangji froze, It couldn't be. He brought his emotions under control, taking a few deep breaths. This was going to be very strange, and whatever hope he had of it being quiet was probably now out the window, but it would be interesting, and maybe good.
He recognized Wei Wuxian. How could he not? However, he had no guarantee that Wei Wuxian would have any memories, or even have any interest in getting to know him if he did. There was no guarantee that the actions of a past life dictated those of this one. He figured that he would be patient, and he would not bring it up unless it became obvious that Wei Wuxian knew or was very interested in knowing.
He realized that he had been staring at his new roommate in wide eyed surprise, a notebook dangling between his fingers, and he set the notebook down, carefully adjusted the ends of his ribbon to be tidier, took a few more deep breaths and said in a quiet but thankfully steady voice, "Nice to meet you. I'm Lan Wangji."

Holy crap it's Lan Zhan. Wuxian thought to himself, frozen to the spot as he processed this information. His new roommate was... a lover in a past life. He felt his face heat up at the thought, and he quickly looked around in hopes Wangji wouldn't notice. "Nice to meet you, too." He ushered to the empty bed. "I presume that one's mine?" He asked, not waiting for an answer before dumping his backpack on the bed and suitcases right next to it. He stole glances at his roommate, as if just looking at him would tell him if he had his memories, or still liked him, or hell, even wanted to associate with him in this life (though it was a little late for that).
He busied himself with unpacking, still occasionally glancing over to Wangji. "So uh... What's your major?" He asked curiously.

Lan Wangji watched Wei Wuxian move about the room. He was very much himself, and it was both pleasing and unsettling. He only nodded when Wei Wuxian made his way to his bed, but the other man made himself at home there without needing verbal confirmation, which made Lan Wangji's life easier. He kept reminding himself in his mind to call this man in this life Wei Wuxian. Maybe someday it would be Wei Ying again, but he could not offer that level of intimacy and strangeness without knowing where they stood.
He gave another tiny smile when Wei Wuxian gave an overture of being friendly. He answered almost too quickly, voice still quiet, "I am double majoring in religious studies with a focus on Chinese religions and music with a concentration in music theory, history, and ethnography. I am also minoring in ethics in society. And yourself?"
He hoped that he did not sound too stiff and formal, and if he did that Wei Wuxian would not mind. It was something that his classmates had often criticized him for, and he was attempting to adopt a more comfortable speech pattern for them, but it did not come particularly naturally to him, especially not when he was anxious.

"That is a lot of major." Wuxian mumbled, feeling like it was very in character for Lan Zhan. "Um, I'm an education major. Studying to be a teacher." He said simply, focusing on getting his bed set up. He noticed Wangji's demeanor hadn't changed much, which was almost a relief. At least he knew how to live with someone like Wangji, even if it hadn't been in this lifetime. He was quiet for a bit as he focused on unpacking before looking to Wangji, "What's uh... what's your schedule like? Hopefully our schedules aren't too off..." He worked in the afternoons, so all his classes were from 8am to 12pm, and then he worked for six hours. He wondered for a moment if Wangji's sleep schedule was anything like Lan Zhan's had been. He sure hoped not.

In an attempt to not hover, Lan Wangji sat at his desk and took the cover off his guqin, brought from home when he had no roommate to bother. He fiddled with cleaning the little details of it while watching Wei Wuxian out of the corner of his eye. He figured he might want to return it to Uncle's house now that he had a roommate again, but he'd wait to see what Wei Wuxian thought.
He smiled very slightly again at Wei Wuxian's major. He said, "I am considering getting a masters in teaching after I have completed my undergraduate degree so that I can teach music. Teaching is an admirable goal."
When Wei Wuxian asked after his schedule, he replied, "I am generally an early riser, but I am quiet and don't use an alarm, so I hopefully should not wake you. I am most often awake by 5:00 am. I have a fairly heavy course schedule, so I am often out of the dorm for most of the day. Most evenings I sleep by 9:00 or 10:00 pm, but as long as you do not come in loudly right as I am falling asleep, I should sleep fine. I do not tend to be bothered by light unless you shine it right in my face or moderate noise."
When he had first started living in the dorms, the latter had not been true, and it had been a challenge at first to get enough sleep. He had adapted though, and he was pleased with that fact.
He asked tentatively, "Do you mind if I practice music in the dorm from time to time? I have this, the guqin, and I also play the viola."
He paused before remembering to add, "What is your schedule like?"

Wuxian couldn't help but do a double take when he saw the guqin, finding it ironic both their instruments appealed to them in this life as well, his flute lessons even began before he regained his memories.
Of course Lan Wangji had the same unbearable sleep schedule. He wondered how weird it would be to ask if he believed in past lives. He'd have to save that conversation for when they got to know each other better. "Oh, that's cool." He resisted the urge to mention being able to see Wangji as a teacher. In this life, he could still be completely different around kids. He had to remind himself Wangji and Lan Zhan were different people, and he had to be careful with his words.
"Um... I'm usually in classes or working from 7:30am to 7pm. I usually go to bed around like... 12... 1-ish..." He faded off, adding under his breath, "not at all," then louder, "but I'd like to think I'm okay at being quiet when there's someone sleeping in the same room. Just let me know if I get too loud or something."
He pulled out his flute from his suitcase and spun it a few times, "As long as you don't mind me practicing, too, I don't mind." He said with a grin.

Lan Wangji gave a slight nod to Wei Wuxian's schedule. He replied, "I will let you know if there is an issue in that case."
He hoped that there would not be. He expected that Wei Wuxian would not be loud in an attempt to cause problems, but he was likely to be loud just in his existence. He had shared space with this man in a past life very well though, so perhaps they would be able to do so again.
He gave a small but genuinely noticeable smile when he saw the flute. He said, "Of course I do not mind you practicing. It would be hypocritical. I also would not mind hearing you play. Are you in any of the ensembles on campus?"
He was glad that they had an interest in common, an obvious one. That would make this easier.
He was also becoming surprisingly aware that Wei Wuxian was still very very pretty in this life. That would make this harder. Lan Wangji was not used to noticing these things.

"Cool," Wuxian replied simply, taking a break from unpacking and leaning against his bed, absentmindedly twirling his flute. He looked over to Wangji when he realized he was asked a question. "Um... no. I'd like to join one, but most of them are in session either when I'm in class or working." He thought a moment before notioning to his flute and adding, "also, one that has space for a dizi specifically rather than generic 'flute' would be nice, too."
The more he observed Wangji's mannerisms and personality, the more he was convinced it would be very hard not to fall for him again. As it was, he had an urge to mess around with him like he used to. Calm down, you don't even know if he has his memories. He reminded himself, stopping his break and emptying his suitcases on to the bed before shoving them underneath. He glanced around the room, noticing everything, minus his bed, was immaculate and had a place. "Ah... I'm afraid I'm not... as organized as you... Please let me know if I get too unbearable."

Lan Wangji nodded, slightly contemplative. He said, "There are not all that many of us who play traditional Chinese instruments in the department, but it might be doable to see if we could put together a small ensemble. I know of at least a few others, and there might be those on campus who play but are not in the music department."
Lang Wangji could not help but smile just a tiny bit at Wei Wuxian's clutter. It was predictable. He thought about it for a minute before saying, "As long as you keep the mess out of the walking paths and around your bed and desk area, it should be fine. I prefer to have my own possessions organized; however, I do not expect others to share my preferences."
He watched Wei Wuxian unpacking and could not entirely understand his method, was there a method? But there was something almost pleasantly nostalgic about seeing Wei Wuxian in his space. This version of him seemed less confrontational. Perhaps life had been a little kinder to him, or maybe it was just that they were meeting a little bit older.
He glanced at the time and realized that the dining halls would be opening soon. He said, "I will be going to dinner shortly. Would you like to join me?"

Wuxian perked up, turning to face Wangji, "oh really?" He asked excitedly. "That'd be so awesome! Especially since if it wouldn't be for a class we could meet anytime. Ooo maybe we could make a club. That would make it easy to get the word out to the students that aren't in the music department. Could be fun."
He looked around the room again and gave Wangji a determined nod, "Yeah, I can do that, I think. Just remind me if I forget. I have a... bad memory." He said, somewhat hesitantly. It always felt weird to say, because he could remember bits about his time as a cultivator fairly easy on any given day. Maybe it was more of a selective memory.
He looked over the clutter on his bed, which was mainly his remaining clothes and books, as well as a few trinkets and knickknacks, and then his flute resting safely on his pillow, and looked to Wangji. "Yeah, sure, I'm starving." He glanced at his phone to check the time and noticed they had some time still before it would open, so he decided to set up his laptop at the empty desk, as well as putting his textbooks in a stack in one corner, and notebooks he used for school in another. Finally, he took a fan that had been gifted to him by Huaisang for a previous birthday and hung it on the wall over his bed. It was nothing special; but Huaisang seemed to have too much making a Halloween-themed fan with a solid reason for making it, so he appreciated it.
He turned to Wangji after making sure it was perfect and looked at the time again. "Should be about open when we get there, no?"

Lan Wangji said softly, "There is an organizational system already present in the music department for putting together not for credit ensembles that meet at times arranged by the participants. Being registered with the music department makes it easier to take part in various performance events though."
He contemplated for a moment and then added, "It is perhaps not as well advertised to the student body as it could be, but it does allow people to express interest in ensembles based on musical instruments even if they do not know others who would want to work with their instrument of choice."
Just in case Wei Wuxian thought that he was expressing displeasure at his idea, he added, tone slightly awkward, "I do not mean that an extracurricular would be a bad plan, but I would perhaps want to connect it with the music department's system."
It was interesting watching the haphazard intentionality with which Wei Wuxian unpacked. He clearly knew where he wanted to place his belongings once he started placing them, but Lan Wangji could not figure out the method with which he selected what to place. He did though now have a desk set up that might be conducive to him studying. Lan Wangji wondered how long it would take Wei Wuxian to turn that set up into something that looked like complete disarray but seemed to work somehow.
He nodded to Wei Wuxian's comment about the dining hall and said, "I generally go to dinner when the dining halls open unless I am in a class at that time. It works better with my schedule."
He did find himself hoping that he would be able to actually spend time with Wei Wuxian now that they were roommates. He was not yet sure if they would have the same sort of connection as they had had in a past life, but he was surprised at how interested he was in forming some sort of bond with the other man. He wondered if he would have felt naturally drawn to Wei Wuxian and his energy even if he had not remembered who he was. The man was, undoubtedly, beautiful in whatever life he was in.

"Oh. I didn't know that. That would work, then. Make our lives easier in the sense we wouldn't have to pitch our club idea and go through hoops. And we could still advertise it in like... the student center or something."
He nodded back and gave his mess a final once-over before grabbing his phone and looking to Wangji. "Ready when you are." He said, putting his phone into his pocket and then keeping his hand there. He pulled from under the bed a pair of flip flops but waited until he was closer to the door to put them on. He then turned to Wangji, waiting for him to follow.

Lan Wangji got to the door right after Wei Wuxian, slipping his own feet into a pair of shoes that he kept beside the door. He said softly, "I often go to the second closest dining hall because they generally have better vegetarian options. If you would prefer to go to the closer one, I am sure that I could find something though."
He headed out the door and said, "Yes, it might be beneficial to advertise something like that a bit. I can look into it when I am at classes in the music department tomorrow. If we need an extra person, I can probably convince my older brother, who is a graduate student and plays xiao, to join us."
He knew that there was at least one person on campus who played pipa, though he did not actually know who it was. He had simply heard the sound in the practice rooms, muffled through a door. He had been curious, but not enough to disturb someone's practice.
