"Ah... Right..." Wuxian replied, nodding. The more he thought about it, the weirder it seemed to suggest mentioning him to Wangji's family without them having any more connection than what they currently had in this life. He recalled Xichen had been... quite supportive of their relationship even before Wei Wuxian had realized it. "I mean, it can wait. The less time I have to spend with Lan Qiren the better, more amenable or not." He scrunched up his face before realizing it sounded like he was insulting him. "Nothing against your uncle, of course." He said, waving the hand holding his flute nonchalantly.
His eyes drifted to his instrument and he laughed. "You know something funny? Remember how we agreed I'd play flute for you sometime? I was going to play that old song... To see if you remembered it. Or well, I say that now, but honestly if someone asks me to play I kind of default to that." He admitted.

Lan Wangji nodded and said, "I believe that Uncle, while more amenable, would likely feel about the same. He does at times struggle with Jingyi, not because he dislikes him, but because they have a certain clash of personalities, and Jingyi has Lan manners even if he doe not always follow them as well as Uncle might like. And you are yourself."
At the mention of the song, Lan Wangji blushed deeply, wondering if perhaps Wei Wuxian mentioning the song as a way of seeing if he remembered meant that Wei Wuxian was interested in something. Between that and the painting, he was distinctly but tentatively hopeful. He said softly, "I know the song, so do most of the Lan family members for that matter."
He did not mention that it was usually only done as a duet by couples, and instead, still blushing deeply, said, gesturing at the guqin on his desk, "We could play it together at some point if you would like."

Wuxian nodded thoughtfully. Still, something was nagging at him and now that he knew Wangji had his memories too, he sat up and looked at Wangji, "Have you found A-Yuan?" He asked. He wanted to know if his kid was okay. Their kid. "Since you've got Jingyi around, surely they've... I don't know... found each other? Are best friends? Something?" He asked desperately. He laid back down, trying to even his breathing as he blinked rapidly. He didn't realize he still felt so invested in the kid. But maybe, it was because after he had lost his sister, and Jiang Cheng hated him, the only family he had in his past life was the Wen Clan, and then later, Wangji and Sizhui, along with the other Lan juniors, and that sappy Ouyang kid when he was around, and Jin Ling sometimes. The most stable people in his life after losing his sister had been Wangji and Sizhui. He'd found one, now he wanted to find the other.
He realized belatedly Wangji had offered to play the song together, and it seemed like a big request, though he didn't get why. They used to play it together often. He figured he'd find out eventually, and said, much quieter than his previous words, "I'd like that."

Lan Wangji nodded and said, voice quiet and serious even for him, "A-Yuan is Jingyi's best friend again, and he does have his memories, but things are... They are complicated. We are doing our best, but there is a lot of conflict and complications in his life right now that I do not know the details of, and he most of all seems to trust Jingyi about it, but even that is somewhat tenuous. I believe he does not want to be a burden, though I have been trying to help in what ways I can."
He had desperately wanted to offer to A-Yuan to just stay with them, to not return to his living situation, but for all that A-Yuan did have his memories, it was difficult. He added, "I can have Jingyi see if A-Yuan would feel ready to meet you. He does have his memories, but it's rough. Sometimes getting one's memories can involve trauma induced memory responses and other issues, especially if there is trauma in the past or current life, or if that trauma resonates between the two."
He felt like he might be saying too much, but Wei Wuxian would want to know, would care deeply.
He was almost relieved by the simplicity of the embarrassment over the song. He asked quietly, "Would you like to play it now?"

Wuxian breathed a sigh of relief with news about A-Yuan, but frowned as Wangji mentioned he was going through a hard time. Then furrowed his eyebrows. "Wait can you... can you elaborate on the uh... trauma... thing?" In almost the same breath, he added, "I'd love to see him if he wants to see me."
He sat up, "Yeah!"

Lan Wangji started tuning the guqin and warming up as he spoke. He said, "Trauma interferes with memories in general on a psychological level. It seems that when there's a resonance between past life trauma and present life trauma, it can cause the memories to come back suddenly and forcefully, and it can cause issues with memory retention in general. It can often be easier to handle the past life memories than present life trauma, and some people will temporarily slip into the memories and block out present day memories. It can be very confusing as well if there are strong similarities between lives. I got my memories earlier than Xichen-ge, and for a while, there were memories with the two of us that I did not know which life they had occurred in unless I asked him about them. It can cause emotional shock as well, especially if you are unprepared."
He finished warming up, and looked over at Wei Wuxian before saying, "I am ready when you are."

Wuxian considered those words, but nodded and brought his dizi to his lips. He began playing, though playing the song was second nature to him and so he was thinking, too. That explained some things. Luckily they had always happened when he was alone, but there was definitely confusion, and a loss of memories, and it possibly even helped to explain his terrible memory (at least in this life). His therapist had told him it was the depression, but there were solid chunks of this life he didn't remember. And in both lives, he had faced significant and multiple traumas, though so far his past life was winning out on the traumatic events counter. Age-wise, still have a ways to go before getting to the end of that story. He reminded himself bitterly. Though, he wasn't planning to invent a new type of what-would-now-be magic that would eventually backfire hard enough to rip him apart.
He opened his eyes, focusing on the music rather than his thoughts. Cultivation skills or not, the song always calmed him down and comforted him, in the same vein as his sister's cooking. He didn't realize, though, just how empty it had felt only playing it with his flute. As the song came to an end, he looked to Wangji and smiled, "It sounds a lot better when you play it." He said, giving him a smile.

One of the few clear memories that Lan Wangji had of both of his parents together and happy in this life was of the two of them sitting in the living room at Uncle's, not long after coming to the US, and playing the song together. Lan Wangji had been sitting on the floor, leaning on his mother's leg, and Xichen-ge had been sitting on the couch near their father. He had not learned the song until after he had gotten his memories back, though he had already been studying the guqin, but he had always thought that it was hauntingly beautiful and familiar. He had never learned it from sheet music the way that most of the other Lan family members had. Instead, after he had gotten his memories back, he had played it over and over again, and sometimes it was one of the only things that had calmed him down. The song had just been there in his mind even though he did not get the memory of writing it until about a year afterwards. At eight though, sometimes he had played it until Xichen-ge had to stop him so that his fingers would not start bleeding.
He did not know how to convey all this to Wei Wuxian, but it felt better, more whole, with both of them playing together. He focused on that soothing feeling, channeling it into the music a bit as he played, the barest hint of blue glow appearing between his fingers and the strings as he focused. Normally, he would not lend enough power to those feelings going into the music for it to happen since it was so much weaker now for anyone than it had been in their shared past life, but there was a part of him that wanted Wei Wuxian to see. He told Wei Wuxian softly when they were done, "It is meant to be played together, not alone, but that is the first time I have played it with someone."
He could tell that he was starting to blush again, but he could only watch Wei Wuxian for his reaction.

Wuxian pointed his flute at Wangji's fingers, looking curiously, "I thought cultivation didn't exist anymore?" He asked, an eyebrow raised. "Anyway, when did it start being meant to be played together? In the past, you wrote it as a solo song, didn't you?" He bounded over to Wangji, crouching by him and tugging playfully at Wangji's bracelet, "Also, also, is this like the Lan forehead ribbon? I've been dying to know." Under his breath, he muttered, "why's it on so well."

Lan Wangji shook his head, blushing a little bit still, and said, "Lan Wangji then wrote it as a duet, even if it could be played alone, it was meant to be played with guqin and dizi. There are many rearrangements today for other instruments as well though."
Lan Wangji blushed harder as Wei Wuxian got right into his personal space to pull at the ribbon. He pulled his hand back gently but did not slap away Wei Wuxian's hands. He said softly, "It is similar, but not exactly the same. Generally, it is worn at all times, and it is a symbol of focus and connection. It is not really meant to be touched by others that you are not deeply close to."
He hesitated between telling Wei Wuxian that he was alright with the other man touching it in this life, but he was conflicted because he was not sure how their interactions would go, and he did not want to give himself false hope of the future. He said, "The exact placement of wearing them and the rules around them have become more relaxed over the years. Most people wear them as bracelets, necklaces or hair ties these days."
He hesitated and said, "About cultivation, mostly. Putting a bit of emotional power into music, blocking or unblocking qi points, feeling the flow of qi, that's about all that I can do. It is not nearly as dramatic as it once was. Not that many people who know spend enough time training to reach the point where they can at all. A few reach the ability to somewhat accelerate healing. It is the same principles used in a large amount of Chinese medicine though. There are even some members of the family trying to study the science of it."
He shrugged, hoping that it would be enough of an explanation for Wei Wuxian.

Wuxian mulled over the comment, thinking to himself, Wow, you were really that oblivious back then... He shook his head, quietly tsking at his past self. "Honestly, based off the memories I currently have, I never realized it was a duet. I guess past me just thought it was... I don't know, convenient? That it matched our instruments well." He tilted his head to one side and let out a sigh, "I'm coming to realize there's oblivious, and then there was my past self." He let out a bitter laugh, muttering "he was something else" before returning his attention to Wangji.
"But isn't it harder to avoid having people touch your wrist? I feel like hand touches happen accidentally a lot of the time. Wouldn't that lead to them being used more as necklaces? And hair ties... Are there some people in the Lan family that just... don't take down their hair? All day? Sounds fake but okay." He was trying to connect what he knew about the forehead ribbons from their past life with what Wangji was telling him. So touching it was still something personal. He noted Wangji's reaction was not anger, but rather soft, and he seemed embarrassed about it. It was really a cute reaction if he were honest with himself.
"Sounds like Wen Qing's medical notes could have been useful, presuming it would last that long. She had some interesting books though." He stated matter-of-factly, though in reality he remembered getting to read the texts she had in his past life, but didn't fully remember what they contained outside of the golden core transfer text. Though in his (past life's) defense, he had read a lot at that time.

Lan Wangji sighed and looked away saying, "At least at first, that Lan Wangji would not have wanted to tell you due to embarrassment or worry."
He looked down at his bracelet and said, "I usually wear long sleeves and keep it within the sleeves. But yes, I know people who wear it as a necklace for that reason, or around their ankle. However, an accidental brush is different than an intentional touch as well."
Lan Wangji shrugged and said, "Many medical texts have been maintained for that long, or generally copied over and over. Medical texts are not my area of specialty though, so I do not know precisely what has been maintained."

"Hm... That's seems about right. Totally fair." Wuxian said with a nod.
"Ah... I see. It's definitely seemed to have become more lax, then." He mused, eying the bracelet with a mischievous look. He thought about trying to pull it off again, but he felt the knot, and then Wangji, would stop him. But something about the ribbon made him want to hold it in his hands, perhaps residual feelings of mischievousness from his past life.
He realized he'd managed to get sidetracked and blinked out of his daze in time to hear the end of Wangji's talk about medical textbooks. "Oh. That's also fair."

Lan Wangji said, "Even the Lan family is capable of adapting to a changing world. The rules had to change to fit the world around them, and they have always been in flux, though it was not until after the past Wei Wuxian that they really started removing no longer relevant rules. The clan leaders after my brother's past life were the ones who started the first major revision."
Part of him wanted to just tell Wei Wuxian about everything that he knew about their past lives and the history of it, but he was not sure that Wei Wuxian was ready for that. He also had the sneaking suspicion that it would be him trying to manipulate Wei Wuxian towards a relationship with him again. He hoped that that would happen, but it needed to be a decision of this life not an obligation from the past.
He looked at Wei Wuxian clearly thinking about reaching for the ribbon again, and he said very very softly, a touch of warning in his voice, "If you keep touching it now that you know, it might make me think that you mean something by it."
He did not know if Wei Wuxian would get the hint of what he was saying, but he hoped that maybe it would either give him a reprieve from the strange maybe intimacy of the situation or at least make Wei Wuxian more obvious in what he was thinking with regards to their future relationship direction.

"Oh really?" Wuxian asked curiously, looking up to Wangji with a mischievous smile, "did my past self do something to encourage them to change? Broke too many rules?" He asked with a quiet laugh.
Wuxian debated for a moment deliberately touching it. He did mean something by it, but he was also seemingly constantly going back and forth between thinking this was the old Lan Wangji, and remembering this was his roommate who he had met only a couple months and didn't technically fully know yet. If anything, he should wait until he could stop confusing the two before he made a move. Still, he teasingly poked Wangji's arm just above the ribbon.
