((Note: Takes place early March 2020.)) Wuxian was getting bored with studying. The art exhibit was happening that afternoon, and he was going to go with Wangji, but for right now, it was a quiet, peaceful day and they were studying in their dorm. Wuxian was still trying to figure out if Wangji had his memories, but so far the other man had managed to elude every attempt he tried to find out. He was pretty sure he had called him Lan Zhan one too many time for him to have not noticed, but either he had an even better poker face this time around, or it was a name he still had and therefore didn't think much of it, and Wuxian couldn't tell for the life of him if Wangji noticed or not. Because they were both studying, it was really quiet in their dorm room. Wuxian had headphones on, and was listening to music, but even though it was instrumental that was meant to help a person focus, he felt awkward listening to it without headphones. Like he'd annoy Wangji if he broke the silence. But he'd been studying for nearly three hours now and his eyes were blurring over and he was pretty sure he didn't know what he read for the last three pages. He closed his textbook and quietly put it back onto his textbook stack before casually picking up one of his sketchbooks and turning it to a blank page. He switched the music he was listening to, instead changing it to a rock playlist he had. He wondered how much he could make it look like his past life's picture without Wangji noticing. Wangji didn't wear Lan Clan robes anymore, but he still wore the same colors and comfortable looking formal wear. You haven't changed at all, Lan Zhan. He thought affectionately, sneaking glances in Wangji's direction as he drew the picture. He only intended for it to be a quick sketch, but it ended up taking him almost an hour anyway. Finally, he finished, examining the picture before grinning. He was about to get up to show Wangji when he remembered something he had added last time that he almost forgot about this time, quickly adding a flower behind Wangji's ear. He carefully ripped the page out, for once thankful for the perforated edges (normally he hated them because his pictures, especially heavily saturated ones, liked to try to escape without his wanting them to), and went over to Wangji's desk, for a moment, he almost wished he had some sort of explicit manga on him, but all of that was not in the dorm with him, and even back at home was still hidden away, but it would have really been funny to pull the same prank on him as before. He crouched down next to Wangji's desk, letting the picture fall so it floated right on top of Wangji's textbook. "What do you think?" He asked, giving Wangji a cute smile. Tags: Lan Wangji

Lan Wangji had been focusing on his work, so while he had heard Wei Wuxian moving around in the background, and even coming closer to him, he was still startled when Wei Wuxian put the drawing down over the chapter he had just finished reading. He flinched a tiny amount and hoped that Wei Wuxian would not notice how startled he had been.
His breath caught in his throat a little bit when he actually saw the drawing though. It was done in a different medium, but the same pose and the same base style seemed to be represented. He let out a small, "Oh," as his fingers drifted up to hover over the flower. That was the detail that struck him the most. Did Wei Wuxian have his memories? Or was he just so much the same person that he made a similar decision? Lan Wangji was not at all sure.
That did make him momentarily dread picking up the picture, but he did, saying softly, "Thank you. This is lovely, and your style is really beautiful."
He was relieved when there was no pornography hidden under it placed on his book. He handled the drawing delicately, looking at the fine details of it appreciatively. He added, "I can see why you have a piece in the art exhibit that we are going to. You are very talented and have obviously put a lot of work into developing that talent."
He chanced a glance out of the corner of his eye at Wei Wuxian. He wanted to see the other man's reaction to being praised. Finally, he asked, "Would you be alright with me hanging it up, or do you want it back? I know you might need whatever you draw for a portfolio."

He perked up at Wangji responded positively to the picture, noticing his attention to the flower. He wondered for a moment if he remembered, or just found it interesting. The problem with you being so similar to before if I have no idea about your reactions... He sighed mentally. Outwardly, he grinned, "I'm glad you like it!"
He puffed up at the further compliments, but felt a heat make his way to his cheeks and he looked away, playing with a bit of his hair. "Thanks..." He said softly. He knew of artists much better than him, though he at least knew where his strengths lay when it came to art.
He waved a hand, "Do whatever you want with it. I draw portraits all the time, so I have plenty of pictures for my portfolio." He said, finally standing up again. His eyes drifted to the time, nervous and excited to see Wangji's reaction to the piece he had in the exhibit. "We should probably leave for the exhibit in about thirty minutes." It would make them early to the exhibit, but he was anxious to see how Wangji reacted to his piece. If he just said it was pretty, or well-done, then he knew the answer. But if he reacted differently... Wuxian wasn't sure how he'd respond to it. What would happen after that? To them? What if, for whatever reason, even with his memories, Wangji hated him and pushed him away? What if he didn't think them soulmates anymore? The more he thought about it, the more nervous he became, and so he just wanted to get it over with before he could over-think things any further.

Lan Wangji delicately tucked the edges of the portrait into the edges of the frame of the corkboard, using push pins to hold the edges in place on the two sides not held by the frame, but carefully not puncturing the paper. He would frame it later when he was able to grab an empty frame, but he wanted to treat it with care for now.
He turned to Wei Wuxian and nodded, saying, "I only need my shoes and keys and wallet to be ready to go."
He considered the other man's features, wondering if Wei Wuxian remembered or was just so similar because he was himself. There was no good way to ask. He headed over to the door, grabbing his things and putting them in his pockets and slipping on a pair of shoes. He nodded and said, "I am ready when you are. We will get there right about as it opens. Was that the plan?"

Wuxian nodded, putting his laptop to sleep and grabbing his wallet, keys, and phone and shoving them into various pockets before bounding over to Wangji. His desk was still a mess otherwise, but he could always clean it up later. "Yup! That way, we can get through the whole exhibit before it gets too crowded, and can come back to the dorm if we want to." He explained, tugging on his shoes. He left out he specifically said "we" because - at least in this life - he had no evidence of Wangji disliked crowded spaces. Or that depending on his reaction to his picture, they may leave early to discuss things... a lot of things. As he finally got his second shoe on, he headed toward the door, hiding his nerves with excitement, "Let's go~!" He said in a loud, sing-song voice.

Lan Wangji was curious if Wei Wuxian was just impatient or was being considerate to his quietness and what was probably relatively evident desire to avoid large crowds. He gave Wei Wuxian's enthusiasm a tiny smile and started heading towards the hall where the exhibit was being held. He had remembered the location from when he had asked Wei Wuxian several days prior when putting it into his schedule.
The description of the exhibit had been minimal, just "student pieces," when he had looked it up, and he was curious for Wei Wuxian's explanation, so he asked quietly, "What sorts of pieces should I expect in the exhibit? Is there a theme?"
He wanted to hear Wei Wuxian be excited to tell him about it considering how full of energy the other man was. He made sure to walk close beside Wei Wuxian, trying to show that he wanted to be there in his own way.

Wuxian walked in pace with Wangji, hands in his pockets as he thought over what he knew of the event. "Not necessarily a theme, but rather the coordinator wanted to include as many of the advanced art students as feasibly possible - which I am not, technically, so that makes my getting in an entry even more exciting." He had done art classes during his time at college, but now his courses were becoming more major-focused, and so he didn't have the time or space for an art class that semester, and didn't want to add art as a minor, though he did technically make it to the advance art classes before he had to quit, which is part of why he knew about the exhibit and already knew the coordinator.
He continued, "So a lot of it is art done in a medium the artist is most comfortable using, so there'll be some art on paper, art on canvas, sculptures, paintings, etc, etc... I haven't gotten to see a lot of the other entries, but the ones I have seen look very good. Another way my piece is different is I used watercolor as a medium, which is not a medium I am comfortable in, but I wanted to challenge myself. That, and, when I asked the coordinator if I could submit a piece, she said," he stood up straight, and brought a hand to his chin, stroking it introspectively, "'Impress me and I'll consider it,'" he returned to his usual posture, "so I did just that." He said with a proud grin.

Lan Wanji nodded as Wei Wuxian described the exhibit. He smiled very slightly at the imitation of the coordinator, not wanting Wei Wuxian to see his amusement and looking away just a little. When Wei Wuxian was done with his explanation, Lan Wangji said, "I will especially look forward to seeing yours then since it must be very impressive."
He was glad that the walk to the exhibit hall was not very long because he was very curious to see Wei Wuxian's work in this life, and he also was sure that he would appreciate the rest of the exhibit. He glanced at Wei Wuxian as they arrived and asked, "Would you like to show me yours first, or would you prefer we tour the exhibit as a whole?"

Wuxian debated for a moment between saying they should see his art first or going through the whole exhibit first, and was glad for an excuse to pause before an answer as the coordinator approached him.
"Wuxian, good to see you, and so early. That's unusual. Who's your friend?" She asked.
Wuxian motioned to Wangji, standing slightly ahead of his roommate. "This is my new roommate, Wangji. I told him about my piece and he wanted to come with me to see the exhibit."
The coordinator nodded and motioned over towards the exit door. "Your piece is hanging up over there. There's only been a few people through so far, but you've received a few compliments on it already."
"Wow, really?!" Wuxian asked excitedly. She nodded and then dismissed herself as a few other people shuffled in, and Wuxian looked to Wangji, just remembering he had been asked a question. "Since my piece is by the exit anyway, we can look through the rest of the exhibit and save mine for last." He suggested.

Lan Wangji nodded politely to the coordinator, letting Wei Wuxian handle the social interaction. After she had left and Wei Wuxian made his plan, saving his painting for last, Lan Wangji nodded and said, "I would love to hear your thoughts on the other pieces in the exhibit as we go through it then."
He mostly just wanted to listen to Wei Wuxian talk. There were some paintings that did not really strike Lan Wangji as incredible to start off with, but they were of people and in a style that he was not terribly comfortable or familiar with. He saw a few things further along that looked like scroll paintings that he was interested to see, but he was good at being patient, and Wei Wuxian's piece was his reward at the end.
He waited for Wei Wuxian to lead the way through the exhibit so that he could listen to his new roommate talk.

Wuxian nodded, explaining the different art pieces to the best of his ability, mostly swinging wildly back and forth between what he knew about the artist and what he thought the intention for the art piece was.
It wasn't long before they were nearing the end, and Wuxian found himself become less able to talk as they neared his painting. He wiped his hands on his pants, feeling nervous as they approached his painting, and he looked away from Wangji while also trying to gauge his reaction. A trained watercolor artist would probably say it looked amateurish, which Wuxian would admit it was since it wasn't his usual medium, but neither of them were trained watercolor artists, and he wasn't nervous about Wangji judging his piece, he was nervous about his reaction. He held his breath, hardly able to get out, "here it is..." as they approach his painting.

Lan Wangji enjoyed the flow of Wei Wuxian talking about the art and artists, though he was not sure that he actually learned anything about the art from him. Some of it was interesting. He lingered for a bit over the two scroll paintings. They were quite good, and he was curious if the artist was someone he knew, but Wei Wuxian did not tell him much about them as he jumped from topic to topic. It was reassuringly like him.
Lan Wangji could tell that Wei Wuxian was getting nervous as they approached his painting, and Lan Wangji was starting to be deeply curious why. When they finally arrived at the watercolor, Lan Wangji stared at the scene, eyes widening slightly, he took a sharp intake of breath. He knew that hill, he had actually been there in this life as a tiny child, but he remembered it much better as a teenager, letting go of the lantern with Wei Wuxian in a past life shown in the painting. He said questioning, slight blush on his cheek, "Oh, Wei Ying... It's beautiful."
He glanced at the other man, hesitant, did Wei Wuxian remember? He wanted to get out of the art gallery where other people were and talk to him properly, try to understand what was going on better. He strongly suspected that this painting meant that Wei Wuxian had some memories but he wasn't sure how much.

Wuxian sighed at the reaction he got from Wangji. It was still... undetermined. Though he didn't know what he expected Wangji's reaction to be, and he realized all possible scenarios he had had about this moment involved a Wangji that was extremely out of character for the other man. "Thank you..." He said softly. He wasn't sure how to expand it, instead pointing to the title of the piece for Wangji to look at.
A promise: Stand with justice, live with no regrets Wei Wuxian. Watercolor on paper.
It was a motto he stood by even now, and this was the first memory of his past life he had that didn't give him nightmares, so he treasured that memory. The fact that his soulmate was in that memory possibly helped too. He looked around to see if there were any other pieces before the exit, muttering quietly, "it's starting to get more crowded, and we're at the end, so if you want to leave now, we can..."

Lan Wangji nodded and did not quite hurry from the building. With that caption, he was almost certain that Wei Wuxian remembered, but he was still slightly terrified of actually asking. Still, once they were clear of the exhibit hall, in an area without nearby people, he asked hesitantly, "Wei Ying, do you -"
He trailed off, not quite sure how to finish that sentence, and his fingers found the Lan ribbon tied around his wrist, pulling it loose of his sleeve, he fiddled with it, trying to figure out how to ask Wei Wuxian if he remembered without sounding like he was someone that Wei Wuxian did not want to be around if he was wrong.

Wuxian followed Wangji, curious about that response. When the area was clear of people and Wangji began talking, he suddenly became aware of the name Wangji used. In this life, he hadn't heard that name since before his parents died. He felt like tears were going to surface if he let them, but he blinked quickly and looked up and away from Wangji. He didn't expect that hearing that name would make him emotional; he barely remembered his biological parents in either lifetime, so it didn't make sense to have an emotional attachment to hearing it. Unless... His eyes drifted to Wangji, noticing he was playing with a bracelet that looked not unlike the old Lan forehead ribbons. He wondered if the emotions were from hearing him say it. It had been significantly longer in that case, but he had clear memories of his voice saying his name.
His eyes honed in on an end of the ribbon, and he tugged at it mischievously, though was disappointed to find it was tied well and didn't come undone. "Lan Zhan..." He began hesitantly, "Was that scene... Familiar at all?" He asked, formulating what sort of rambling he'd do if Wangji said no.
