Lan Wangji breathed a sigh of relief. He was pretty sure that Wei Wuxian was nervous, and hinting at the same thing that he was trying to. He was not used to seeing Wei Wuxian nervous. He said softly, still a tiny bit anxious, "Yes, it did. I did not expect Wei Ying to remember. It is not common outside of the few groups who have kept the old traditions."
He tensed, waiting just to make sure that he was not wrong. He hoped though, that would make this easier, though also potentially more embarrassing. He wondered if Wei Wuxian would still be interested in him like that. He had lived with those memories of them in the past for long enough at this point that he had always sort of expected that if they met again, something would happen, but he also knew enough about past lives to know that they were not always predictors for the present.

"It's just... since you mentioned you lived in China as a kid I thought maybe it would-" He paused, realizing Wangji had affirmed his question, not denied it. He let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding for so long. His smile was wide, and he stopped himself from jumping at Wangji to give him a hug. "I do remember..." He hesitated before continuing, "I started to get my memories when I was 16... At first I thought they were just... bad dreams." His face darkened. "Very... Very bad dreams." He shook his head. "Ever since I saw you again I've been trying to figure out if you remember because well... You're not easy to read. I've been calling you Lan Zhan so much though! Is that even your name in this life?!" He asked exasperated. "I panicked every time!!"

Lan Wangji blinked in confusion at Wei Wuxian several times and said, "You have? I had not noticed, and while it is a name that a few of my family members use or have used in this life, it is not commonly something I use."
Lan Wangji listened to Wei Wuxian's explanation and said, "I can see why getting your memories would have been painful. I hope that they were not all so bad though. I got mine quite early, when I was about eight, so it was quite overwhelming, but the Lan family still holds to many of the old ways, though there are far fewer rules than there once were. We teach about the memories and train to be ready for them, but even doing so, most people do not get them until around thirteen or fourteen. For someone not prepared, especially if some of the memories are traumatic, it can be difficult."
He wanted to reach out and squeeze Wei Wuxian's hand or wrap him in his arms, but he did not know that Wei Wuxian would want that in this life, and Lan Wangji knew that the actions of the previous life did not dictate the actions of the next. He said softly, "The memory that you painted was an early good one for me as well."

Wuxian nodded quickly, "Lots of times! And honestly I don't know if I'm relieved it's a name you have in this life or not because if you didn't have your memories you'd be wondering why I knew a name you didn't commonly use." He rambled.
"That is... Very early." He realized something, putting the dots together as he recalled Wangji mentioning he lived with his Uncle. "Was that... When your parents died?" He asked hesitantly. He was glad his memories didn't start coming to him when he lost his parents. It sounded like at least Wangji had support from family for it, but even at 16, he had no one to talk to about it, and that was something he especially wouldn't have told his foster family.
He shook his head, trying to get out of the 'what if' thoughts invading his mind, and smiled, looking way. "That memory was the first one to not be counted as a nightmare." He said softly.
He jumped back to an earlier comment, looking to Wangji, "So... The Lan clan - or I guess it'd just be called family now, huh? - actually lessened the rules throughout the years rather than add to them? How many are there now?" He asked, genuinely curious, but also wanting to change the conversation from the more heavy topics.

Lan Wangji gave him the most obvious smile he had produced in Wei Wuxian's presence in this life yet and said, "I do not remember this far yet, but you left an impressive mark on the Lan clan in that life, and yes, we mostly just refer to ourselves as the Lan family now. The rules started to diminish after the next clan leaders took over, together."
He thought about it and said, "Most of them are considered more guidelines now, and many of them have been dropped fully because they had not aged well. Some of them, most of us follow out of closer to necessity. For example, no one in the family has any sort of alcohol tolerance."
He looped back to an earlier point and said, "How far do you remember to? Most of the time, people remember a little bit past their current age. With training, it can be stretched further, but it is hard to access memories of someone in a much later life stage than you are."
His features fell and he said softly, "I did remember shortly after my parents passed away. It happened very close to the same age as it had in the previous life, and with a similar response. It was partially a problem because an eight year old does not incorporate the memories of a sixteen year old well, but that memory was a bit of a touchstone because it was easier at that age than a lot of them."
He shook his head, realizing that he had just given a small lecture on the whole thing. He was not used to trying to convey that much information outside of teaching things to people or presenting in class, so he had naturally fallen into that sort of mode. He glanced at Wei Wuxian, wondering what he would say. It would be hugely different if he remembered after he died and came back or did not.

"Still no alcohol tolerance?" Wuxian asked with a sly grin. Even though he was only 20, he'd gotten a hold of enough alcohol through the years to know he had a strong tolerance for it. He wondered if Wangji had ever tried alcohol, and if so, if his drunk personality was the same as before.
He hesitated before replying, "Um... How much do you remember?" He tried pathetically, though it was a serious question. It'd be awkward to say he remembered them being together, living out married life, everyday means everyday, if Wangji didn't remember that. "I mean... I guess technically I remember about... thirteen or fourteenish... years further than my current age?" He tried hesitantly. He wiggled his hands, "The timing is kind of weird since I kind of... you know. Died." He said bluntly. He looked to the ground and added in a low whisper, "That was the first memory though." He felt cold suddenly, and wrapped his arms around himself.

Lan Wangji blushed a little bit as he said, "I remember until I was in my late thirties, maybe early forties, there are a few memories that I have not fully placed."
He reached out and put a tentative, gentle hand on Wei Wuxian's arm and said, "I am sorry, that must have been a painful first memory. I was fortunate that that was not one that I got in the very first set, though the burning of Cloud Recess unfortunately was, and it would be far worse for you than for me."
He wanted to reach out and hold Wei Wuxian, but the timing that Wei Wuxian remembered to was awkward. It could include or not include them settling together, but it might end in the chaos of his return, or Wei Wuxian could be not counting the years that he had been dead, which would put it much further.

Wuxian appreciated the arm touch, despite it being tentative, and then he realized Wangji had given him a proper time, though in his defense, saying age didn't really help either, as in that particular life he died around age 21, then was brought back thirteen years later in the body of someone younger than he would have been, so by the time he and Wangji had gotten together, he was kind of the same age as Wangji had been while also kind of still feeling like he was about 21, while also being however old Mo Xuanyu was. Figuring out age in fuzzy memories was hard enough without all that. "Um... yeah.. that age range sounds about right." He said, waving his hand. "After the initial death I have no idea how old I'm supposed to be in any of the memories." He said honestly, letting out a laugh.
He blinked as he looked up at Wangji, his chest hurting as the other man admitted to one of his first memories being Cloud Recesses burning. "Didn't you just say you were eight when you got your memories? That must have been terrifying..." He said. He wanted to hug him, but didn't want to push boundaries. But eventually, he couldn't stop himself, wiggling as he asked in a strained voice, "Can I hug you?"

Lan Wangji considered Wei Wuxian. What would a hug mean in this context? Was it just sympathy over the experience of bad first memories? Was it the shared past life?
He hesitated but eventually responded softly, "Wei Ying may if he would like to."
He was not sure how to hold himself, but he turned a little bit towards Wei Wuxian, trying to not be too guarded, and waited to see. They would probably have to talk about it eventually, but he was honestly worried: worried about how much Wei Wuxian knew and understood about the power of his past life over his current one, worried about whether Wei Wuxian would feel like they had to have something.

Wuxian smiled at how Wangji responded before pulling him in for a hug. It felt so... natural, he almost felt like he'd been transported back to that time, and he was in the arms of someone who would protect him no matter what. Something in him missed what he technically never had, and he reminded himself they were still, technically, different people in this life, and just because they shared a past life together, didn't mean the same thing would happen this time. He pulled away and looked away from Wangji, beginning to walk towards their dorm room, but not without checking multiple times that Wangji was following him.
"Sorry I just..." He began, walking backwards to face Wangji, though he still couldn't look at him directly, "Remembering that gives me chills. And I usually seek out someone or something to cuddle. Thanks for letting me hug you."

Lan Wangji tentatively wrapped his arms around Wei Wuxian, and for just a moment, he clung back. He was pretty sure that he wanted this in this life too, and because he was more self aware of that fact about himself, that scared him. He did not want to pressure Wei Wuxian, but he wanted to hold him close and not let anyone hurt him again.
He was just a touch reluctant to let go, but he did, sticking close to Wei Wuxian as they walked back. He wondered if he should tell Xichen-ge, but he also did not want to get that look from his brother. He was not ready yet.
When Wei Wuxian told him how he usually handled the memories, he nodded and said, "If you wish to, you can come to me if the memories are bad."
He wanted to pull Wei Wuxian into another hug, and that both scared him and thrilled him slightly.

Wuxian smiled at Wangji's response, both in that he had reciprocated the hug, and in agreeing to let him cuddle if he wanted to. Even so, he was worried about over stepping boundaries while also wanting to tell Wangji he still loved him and wanted to be with him. Which was silly, considering he wasn't even sure Wangji considered him a friend. He simply nodded in response, and then was quiet for the rest of the walk back to the dorm.
As they entered, he laid down on his bed, grabbing his flute and twirling it mindlessly. "Y'know... it's interesting. It's like... everyone we knew was also reincarnated at the same time. Huaisang is practically my best friend, Jiang Cheng and Yanli are my siblings. Even my adopted parents are the same, and my sister's getting married to the same guy." He shook his head, stilling the flute for a moment as he looked to Wangji. "But from what I know, everyone else I've met doesn't appear to have their memories - though I honestly have no clue about Huaisang... But I think the only real contrast in age was you mentioning Jingyi was already 16, when at our current age he would've still been a toddler. You said the Lan cl-family often got their memories, does this kind of reunion happen often? With all of us?" He asked curiously, propping himself up on his elbows and looking over to Wangji. Quietly, he added, "I've even met Jin Guangyao, though he goes by just Meng Yao now."

Lan Wangji contemplated what Wei Wuxian had said. He started by saying, "My older brother and Nie Mingjue are very close, but as far as I am aware, Mingjue-ge does not have his memories either. If Huaisang does, he has gotten them more recently than the last time I spoke to him much, though that has been several years."
He shook his head then and said, "This is not common at all, especially since it seems very likely that many of us have gone quite a while between reincarnations. Some lives do not leave much of an impression, especially ones where someone does not regain their memories, but the Lan family does try to track these things as well as we can for the people we know of. Lives with strong cultivation always left the strongest impression, which is why for both of us, that time is the overarching past life memory, even if there were lives in between. I do not know of any records of this many people gathering in the same place at the same time, though there could be something that I am missing."
He contemplated Wei Wuxian twirling his flute, which seemed like a nervous gesture that would have fit directly into his previous life if he was not wearing modern clothes.

Wuxian thought for a moment over Wangji's words before smiling softly, "Interesting... Imagine if we had met through Huaisang earlier in this life." He mused. The more he thought about it, the more he wondered if their interactions would have been the same. After all, he had been just obnoxious as a teen as he was in his past life. He wondered for a moment if maybe fate had some sort of plan for them, reincarnating them all at the same time again. He wondered if maybe it was so this time they do things right, but mentally shook his head at the thought.
"I guess... That makes sense." He finally said. He was going to argue he didn't have strong cultivation after giving up his golden core, even after being reborn in Mo Xuanyu's body, but figured the demonic cultivation must've counted for something. "So does this mean you're gonna tell your family about me?" He asked, only half joking. He was actually curious, but wasn't keen to deal with the scrutiny of Lan Qiren.

Lan Wangji paused to contemplate his answer. Finally, he said, "I would introduce them to you if you would like. Uncle would likely be slightly more amenable to you personally in this life, though I find it likely that you would still clash. Jingyi would probably be thrilled to meet you again. I feel like there would be a certain weight of expectation from all of them, especially Xichen-ge, that might make things uncomfortable."
He was not quite sure how comfortable he felt directly telling Wei Wuxian that he would feel a little bit more comfortable seeing if it at least looked like they were headed towards a romantic relationship in this life before introducing him to most of his family members. He figured that Jingyi would be alright sooner because Jingyi would just be his usual, overwhelmingly enthusiastic self, and Wei Wuxian would perhaps appreciate that in him. They had always reminded him of each other in certain ways.
He added softly, "I was not terribly close with Huaisang, though he was one of the few people I would have considered a friend in late elementary and middle school. Xichen-ge did what he could to help Mingjue-ge with things after Mingjue-ge and Huaisang's father passed away."
