Jingyi had sorted it all out so that A-Yuan would be able to come to Saturday family dinner. Uncle had been perfectly open to it as soon as Jingyi actually explained what was going on. Wangji-ge had nodded and not said much, but Jingyi had gotten the impression that he was at least somewhat pleased. Xichen-ge was regretfully not going to be there, or at least not until towards the very end of the evening if he managed to make it at all. Jingyi was a little disappointed about that. In some ways, Xichen-ge would have been the best person to explain things.
Now though, it was Saturday afternoon, and he was sitting out on the front porch, waiting for A-Yuan to show up. He wanted a chance to check how his best friend was doing before they actually went inside, and he'd been told he wasn't needed in the kitchen. Considering he was pretty sure that Wangji-ge had also wanted to kick Uncle out of the kitchen, Jingyi had gone without fussing.
He watched the road carefully, hoping that A-Yuan would show up on the sooner end of the time frame that Jingyi had given him, but not wanting to text and hurry his friend.

A-Yuan got off the bus and started heading towards Jingyi's place. He tried to mentally put his questions in order, but he couldn't really determine which question should go where.
He was starting the question the whole point of the dinner. What was he expecting to get out of it? He certainly couldn't be adopted back into the Lan clan, so was this just going to some sort of self punishment? Yes, he wanted answers, but would the answers get him anything. He'd still live in the church, he'd still be a no one-
A-Yuan shook his head, "don't start already..." he muttered to himself as he turned the corner onto Jingyi's street. He smiled as he saw a figure on the porch. "You're not alone... so stop being so weird about it..." he told himself as he approached.

The moment Jingyi saw A-Yuan approaching, he sprung to his feet and rushed up to the front of the walk to throw his arms around his friend when he got there. He said, "I'm glad you made it over with plenty of time. I was hoping that you'd show up soon."
He tugged A-Yuan towards the porch and the seats there and said, "Wangji-ge and Uncle are home, but Xichen-ge has been really busy with grad school lately. He might show up towards the end of our evening. Wangji-ge's cooking, and he shooed me out of the kitchen and I think that he would have shooed Uncle out too if that wouldn't have been rude. I think that he wanted to make sure that there was good food for you, and like even though Wangji-ge doesn't like super strong spices and flavors and stuff, he's honestly a better cook than Uncle who seems to think that bitter and sour means it's good for you."
He realized it was rambling and smiled at his friend, keeping an arm firmly around his shoulders and asking gently, "How are you doing today?"

A-Yuan smiled as Jingyi rushed towards him. He hugged his friend back and let himself be dragged up to the front porch. "How much sugar have you had today?" he laughed. "You're super excited right now!"
He looped his arm around Jingyi's waist and gave it a squeeze. "I'm okay, I had to finish my chores and homework before coming over so I'm a little tired out, but I took a cat nap on the bus ride over so I'm feeling better."
He looked to the seats on the porch, then the front door, unsure where Jingyi wanted him. "Thanks again for inviting me, and I really appreciate your uncle and Wangji for being willing to talk to me."

Jingyi shook his head and said, "I haven't had any sugar unless you count some juice at breakfast as sugar, and you know the general sugar composition of a lot of vegetables, but no sweets. I'm just excited you're here."
He plopped himself onto the swinging porch bench and tugged a little bit at A-Yuan to encourage him to sit next to him, possibly tugging a touch too hard in his excitement while saying, "Wangji-ge will let us know when it's dinner time, but I was going to sit out here for a little first with you if you wanted. And like give you a chance to ask any questions before there were intimidating adults, well, Uncle and Wangji-ge."
He grinned brilliantly at his friend, trying to convey that he was very pleased to have A-Yuan there.

A-Yuan grinned and let himself be tugged down onto the bench. The tug had been a little harder than expected so he fell a little into Jingyi's lap before quickly scooting off his friend. "Sorry," he said.
He looked out at the street, trying to think which question to ask. "Why do we have our memories? What purpose do they serve?" he turned his whole body to look at his friend, folding one of his legs up under himself to get comfortable.

Jingyi curled an arm tight around A-Yuan, not saying anything about his friend falling partway in his lap, though almost being tempted to see if he'd just stay there if Jingyi tugged him back. He didn't though. A-Yuan seemed a little bit antsy.
Jingyi looked thoughtful about the question and said, "I mean, my answer is that we really don't know why we get them. If you ask Uncle, he'll have a very philosophy professor answer for you, but a lot of it boils down to maybes. Wangji-ge has opinions about it too, so you can definitely ask that of them too. It could just be a thing that happens when someone's soul has been around for a long time, or is very powerful somehow. It could be so that we learn from the past and can do better this time around. It could be so that we can make up for something that we did, or know something good that we did and learn from that."
Jingyi shrugged and said, "Not everyone reincarnates every time, or at the same rate. Not everyone remembers every lifetime either, and sometimes there are new people who don't have any past lives."
He thought about it for a second and said, "The Lan family cares about remembering because it helps preserve family traditions and also helps us do what we can to right wrongs in the world that might otherwise go forgotten and undealt with."

A-Yuan nodded along with his friend's explanation. He honestly wasn't too sure he even wanted his memories, they hadn't made his life any easier or better up to this point.
"Which one is real? Like, am I me, or is he me?" he pointed behind himself as if he was pointing to his past self. "And if we're both real, how do we both exist at the same time?" he shook his head a bit, "I think I've already confused myself."
He reached out and grabbed Jingyi's hand tightly, as if was the only thing anchoring him to this moment.

Jingyi had to think about it for a minute. He'd had a lot more framework than A-Yuan, clearly, and it meant that when he'd gotten his memories, he'd been ready for the idea that he was remembering something real, but also something old.
Finally, he said, "You're the real you. It's kind of like history. You learn about history, or study history, and it's real stuff that happened a long time ago. Sometimes it parallels stuff that's happening in the now part of time. So your past life is real, but it's also old. It's over. You're you, and what you did in a past life, and who you were in a past life, it doesn't control who you are in this one. You can make different decisions, choose to be a different person, but you can also learn things from it and take on elements of that if you want them."
He paused for a little bit trying to put the right words together. He said firmly, "You're you. Yeah, all that stuff that you're remembering happened, but it happened a long time ago, and you're the one in charge of making choices for you. Your past life isn't some person inside you who can wake up and make decisions, it's just like any other memory. Your elementary school self can't suddenly wake up in high school you and take charge either."
He hoped that that helped and that A-Yuan wouldn't look quite so worried.

A-Yuan loosened his grip of Jingyi's hand, "that makes sense..." It did make sense, but it didn't make him feel any better.
"How do you not compare yourself to the past you? Lan Sizhui seems like such a better person than me. He's accomplished and can actually do things.... meanwhile I'm just here.... doing nothing more than pretty much taking up space and oxygen..." A-Yuan hadn't meant to let so many of his insecurities out. He shifted in his seat, turning away from his friend and facing the street, embarrassed by his own thoughts, especially when spoken aloud.

Jingyi rubbed a soothing set of circles on A-Yuan's shoulder and said, "Hey, we're living in a time that's way different from the time they lived in. Back then, it wasn't weird for teenagers to be out doing their own thing in the world, so we got started on our jobs basically way younger. Here and now, teenagers have a lot more restrictions and requirements on them. You're still in school, and that limits where you can go and the amount of your time that you have control over."
He squeezed A-Yuan's shoulders again and said firmly, "Also, you are awesome. You're a great friend, and you care about people and animals and all that. I'd have been so much less happy here if you weren't around."
Jingyi tugged A-Yuan just a little bit closer, wrapping his other arm around his friend and plopping his chin down on A-Yuan's shoulder since the other boy was turned away from him. He said, "Things are going to be OK, and they're going to get better as you get out of high school and all the nonsense that comes with it."
He wondered again if there was a way to convince Uncle to let A-Yuan stay with them, well at the house. He would have felt less conflicted about asking if he was still actually living with Uncle full time and not mainly in the dorms.

A-Yuan leaned back into his friend, feeling safe there in his arms. "I just wish I was somebody in this lifetime. But I guess even back then it took me a while to figure out who I was.... It just seems like I had so many more people around me then. I feel very alone now.."
He squeezed Jingyi's arm, not having to go far because they already encircled him. "I don't feel alone right now though," he turned his head back and gave a meek smile. He turned away a little too quickly, only realizing how close their faces were when he had turned, "sorry" he muttered.
He thought about how dinner would go and the whole evening. Sure, he might get some answers, but then he'd have to go home, alone, to his little room in the church. He sighed, feeling himself deflate.

Jingyi squeezed his arms around A-Yuan again, and when A-Yuan turned his head away, Jingyi tilted his head so that the side of his head rested against the back of A-Yuan's. He was glad that the tactile comfort seemed to be helping at least some. He asked, voice quieter than it usually was, "The church is really lonely for you isn't it?"
He paused for a second and asked tentatively, "Do you want to spend the night? I'm pretty sure that Uncle would OK with it."
He didn't say anything about wondering if A-Yuan wanted to just stay. He was pretty sure that Uncle would welcome A-Yuan. He already thought that A-Yuan was very well behaved, better behaved than Jingyi for sure. There was definitely room in Uncle's house, especially with Wangji-ge and Jingyi in the dorms, not that Jingyi would have objected to sharing a room with A-Yuan.
He added, "A-Yuan, we're sixteen, you've got so much time to figure out who you want to be and how to get there."

A-Yuan's voice came out softly, "yeah... it's very lonely there." He thought about how the sisters cared for him, but always in a distant sort of way. They cared for him, but any time he tried to open up to one of them, they'd direct him to confession. There he'd be told what he was thinking and feeling went against God and His plan for him, and was given prayers to recite in order to repent. One priest had even suggested flagellation but he was quickly dismissed.
"I don't think I could stay the night, I'd like to, but I'm pretty sure the sisters would say no," he chewed on his bottom lip. "I'm sorry," he leaned his head more against Jingyi's, "I feel like I'm a perpetual downer these days..."

Jingyi sighed, he'd worried that A-Yuan would say that. He said softly, "I wish that we could just keep you here instead of you having to go back. Even when Uncle's strict, he's fair, and he'd let you do things. Plus, it would make it even easier for me to visit you. I don't know how that would even work though."
He told A-Yuan softly, "You don't need to apologize for being lonely or sad. You're my best friend, you should be able to tell me this stuff. I'm glad you told me, so maybe I can help at least a little."
He was startled enough that he squeaked and clutched at A-Yuan a little harder when Wangji-ge cleared his throat from the doorway and said, "Dinner is ready. I will be putting it on the table in a moment. Come on in. Welcome A-Yuan."
After he almost immediately returned inside, Jingyi kept his arms around A-Yuan for a moment longer and said, "Come on, let's go eat and get some of your questions answered."
He stood and offered his friend a hand up.
