Jingyi patted A-Yuan's hair reassuringly and said, "You said you wanted to go, and then you passed out on your way to the door. I caught you, so you didn't hit your head or anything."
Wangji-ge disappeared and quickly reappeared with a glass of water, and handed it to Jingyi who held it out to A-Yuan, ready to help him with it if he needed the help.
Jingyi was about to say something to try to soothe his apology, but he was surprised by Uncle speaking first, "You have nothing to apologize for A-Yuan. This is hard, but it is not your fault, and we will do what we can to help with it. For the moment, you should rest and allow yourself to settle a little bit. If you think that you can convince the sisters to let you, it might be simplest if you were to spend the night to recover, but if there is no good way to do so, we can have Xichen drive you back when he gets home, which should not be too late."

A-Yuan shyly leaned forward to place his lips on the glass. He didn't think he could manage holding the glass without spilling or dropping it. He took a sip and it was like a balm to his throat, "thank you."
He closed his eyes and rested his head on Jingyi's shoulder, "when my voice doesn't sound so hoarse, I'll try calling the sisters." He opened his eyes and looked at the ribbon tied around his wrist, it made him smile because he could tell the bow had been tied by Jingyi, it matched the ones on his shoes.
"So all this... blockage, isn't normal, right? Usually the Lan's are much better at this part, right?" he tried not to scoff at himself, as he solidified the fact that as close as they were, he wasn't really a part of this family.

Jingyi focused on helping A-Yuan to drink some of the water without spilling it on his friend. He'd never done something like this to help someone else drink, so it seemed somehow hugely important that he got it right. Dumping water on A-Yuan right now would be just one more thing on top of everything, and it seemed really important to not do it. He was relieved that he successfully did not tip the glass over.
Jingyi nodded when A-Yuan explained that he would wait to call the sisters for a bit, gently patting A-Yuan's hair more as A-Yuan leaned his head against him. He was glad at least that he could be there to provide, possibly quite literally in the physical sense, support for his friend.
At A-Yuan's question, Uncle said, "The blockage would not be normal if someone had been trained to be prepared for it and knew what was going on. It would also be unusual if someone was living a comfortable, happy, well supported life. However, the less understanding someone has of regaining their memories, the more it is likely to be extremely confusing, and the more traumatic their experiences in this life have been, the more likely they are to have difficulty and blockages around their memory. In some cases, it can be because there is at least a part of them that would rather live in the past life's memories if they are better or more pleasant than parts of the current life. In other cases, it can stem from a lack of personal security and stability making it harder to wrap their mind around the ideas and having suddenly twice as much memory, at least, to have to accommodate for. Even in the most supported, stable cases, it can be very overwhelming."
Wangji-ge added, "I got my memories very young, after something distressing and somewhat traumatic. It took me far longer than average to incorporate the memories, especially since a similar distressing event happened in both my past life and this one around the same age. It was not quite as extreme in some ways to what you have just experienced, but it bore some similarities."
Jingyi was somewhat surprised to hear Wangji-ge share something so personal. Jingyi knew the edges of what Wangji-ge was talking about, but he'd known his cousin for years, and he didn't know the details. He was surprised, but pleased, that Wangji-ge would share even the outline of the situation with A-Yuan to help reassure him.

"My past life's memories being happier than these ones... that sounds about right. And I suppose I kind of relate to the lack of personal security and stability too." A-Yuan used what strength he had left to deposit himself in Jingyi's lap, wrapping his arms underneath his friend's arms and holding him tight.
"Sorry, right now you're the closest thing I have to good memories in this life and personal security, so I'm going to borrow you for a while," he said while his face was buried in the crook of Jingyi's neck.
"I don't want to not acknowledge that you just told me something very personal, and I thank you for it, I just need... I don't really know what I need right now..." he told Wangji, "thank you. All of you."

Jingyi wiggled around in the chair to seat himself more stably and wrapped his arms firmly around A-Yuan, grateful that Wangji-ge took the water from his hand as he started adjusting himself to be able to hold A-Yuan.
He said softly, "You don't need to apologize. I've got you. I am always happy to hug you if it helps."
Wangji-ge just gave a light hum of acknowledgement, either not knowing what to say to A-Yuan's thanks or not wanting to speak more, Jingyi wasn't really sure which.
There was a small part of him that was definitely enjoying the chance to hold A-Yuan, but most of him was still preoccupied with worry for his friend.

A-Yuan took a few more calming breaths before sitting up. "Thanks," he told his friend. "I should probably call the sisters now," he said, getting up carefully, making sure he could support himself. "I'm going to step outside to call them."
He held up his phone as proof and made his way out to the porch. He sat where he and Jingyi had been sitting earlier in the evening and took a deep breath while the phone rang.
"Hello Sister Agatha, it's me, A-Yuan. Would it be possible to stay over tonight?" He paused and listened to the litany of reasons why the answer was no and waited for her to finish.
"It's Saturday, there's no school tomorrow, I've finished my homework, I've finished my chores and I will be there for Mass tomorrow morning." He paused again, listening to her conditions. "Yes, I apologize for speaking out of turn and for talking back. And yes, I will go to confession and be sure to repent sister."
He hung his head down, trying not to sigh into the phone, "because I am a sinner, and unworthy of all love, except for that of our God. I will thank Him for the blessing he has bestowed upon me in order to keep me righteous." He paused again, listening, "thank you Sister Agatha, I will see you in the morning."
He hung up the phone and laid down on the bench on the porch. Even that phone call had taken so much energy out of him. "I think I do wish I only had your memories, at least you were too young to remember most of your trauma," he said to the invisible Sizhui his mind had concocted.

Jingyi wanted to follow A-Yuan out to the front porch, but he knew that it wasn't a good idea. A-Yuan clearly didn't want to have him overhear the conversation with the sisters, and while that made him more worried on A-Yuan's behalf, at least this would give them a chance to have A-Yuan spend the night, hopefully.
He couldn't keep from fretting at the window and watching his friend make the call. He could justify that with worrying that A-Yuan might collapse again. It meant that he saw A-Yuan hang up and lie down on the bench, and he gave it a count of ten and slipped out onto the front porch, coming to crouch next to A-Yuan.
He said gently, "Hey, did they let you stay over? Do you want to come back inside? We can stay out here for a little too if you think being out in the fresh air would help."

A-Yuan nodded, "I can stay over," he said as he made himself smaller on the bench so Jingyi could sit down.
"I have to be home in time for Mass though, it starts at 7:30. Buses don't run that early on Sundays, do you think Xichen-ge could give me a ride? I can walk if he can't." He said, curling in on himself more.
"I might need a band-aid when we get back inside," he held up his hand, which beared the earlier cuts from the headband.

Jingyi grinned when A-Yuan said that he could stay, plopping down beside his friend and throwing his arms around him. He said, "I'm glad you can stay."
He listened to A-Yuan's request about getting a ride and said, "I bet Xichen will say yes, we'll ask him when he gets back, but if not, I'll walk you over. It's not that far, and everyone in the house will be up by then. We usually eat breakfast around six, so we can even feed you before getting you back."
He wished that A-Yuan didn't have to leave so early in the morning, but he'd count it as a small win.
When A-Yuan mentioned needing a bandaid, Jingyi caught his hand and looked it over. He said, "If you're ready, let's go inside and get this washed and disinfected and get some bandaids, OK?"
He made a small concerned face but tried to hide it before he looked up at A-Yuan to check his reaction.

A-Yuan nodded and got up, letting himself be lead by this hand. He trudged along behind Jingyi and paused when his stomach let out rumbling growl. He used his other hand to clutch his stomach, "I guess my stomach is mad I threw things up... I think it wants food now."
He rubbed his belly, trying to get it to quiet down but it kept grumbling at him. "Sorry," he laughed and followed Jingyi inside. He followed him into the bathroom and glanced over at the toilet, relieved he hadn't made a mess with his earlier antics.
He started washing his hands in the sink, "It's not bad, don't worry about it," he said, noticing how concerned his friend looked.

While A-Yuan was washing his hands, Jingyi pulled down the antibiotic ointment and bandaids. He told his friend, "We can reheat something for you. The soup with ginger and herbs is good for your stomach, but I think that we also have some báizhōu, um, congee, which is always an easy stomach food."
When A-Yuan was done washing his hands, Jingyi quickly washed off his own hands and took the hand with the cuts and carefully applied the ointment and bandaids to the cuts. He said, "They aren't that bad, but it would be if they got infected, and I'm more worried that you put them there in the first place. Let me take care of you a little? It'll make me feel less worried."
He was so relieved that A-Yuan was staying over. It would mean that he could keep an eye on his friend and be reassured that he was OK.

A-Yuan watched Jingyi fussing over his hands and it brought a smile to his face, "I honestly don't remember how they got there..." he said, referring to the cuts.
He watched Jingyi's face as he applied the ointment. Unconsciously, he lifted his other hand and ran them along his friend's eyelashes. "Sorry, they're just so long," he said with an awkward laugh, unsure why he'd just done that.
"I think I'd like to soup, it smelled delicious." He tried to take his hand back, "I'm fine."

Jingyi stilled, quiet and waiting, as A-Yuan touched his face. Was there something in his eyelashes? It was a weird, fluttery feeling of uncertainty as to what was going on. He let his eyes fall shut for a second, half tempted to lean just a little bit into A-Yuan's touch, but also not wanting to startle his friend again. When A-Yuan spoke, Jingyi blinked at him a few times in confusion, shaking the moment off. He said, voice cracking just a little bit, much to his chagrin, "Are they? I never really looked at them like that."
His inner voice told him, Smooth, Jingyi, really smooth.
Jingyi's hands lingered on A-Yuan's, but when his friend pulled away, he somewhat reluctantly let go. He hooked an arm around A-Yuan's shoulders instead and said, "Let's go get you some of that soup then. Wangji-ge will probably want to reheat it because despite the fact that I can be trusted to do something as simple as reheating soup, he chases me out of the kitchen regularly. I mean, not literally chases, but like a firm look of this is my kitchen."

A-Yuan smiled, "yes, very long. I'm jealous," he ran his finger across his eyelashes again.
He followed Jingyi back out to the living room, there he bowed to Wangji and Qiren, "sorry for the trouble and thank you for letting me stay the night." As he stood back up his stomach betrayed him again, yowling. He covered his stomach, shyly. "I think I'll have some of that soup now."
He looked at the Lan family, his heart swelling. He felt safe here, which was weird considering he'd spent the past while puking, fainting and forgetting himself. He thought about it, trying to sort out if the comfort was from this life or the last. As soon as the headache thought about returning, A-Yuan grabbed Jingyi's hand and held it tight.

As A-Yuan said that he was ready to eat something, Wangji-ge retreated to the kitchen, and could be heard reheating the meal on the stove. He didn't say anything as he went, but Jingyi wasn't terribly surprised, Wangji-ge had already done a lot of talking for him for the evening.
He was a little startled when A-Yuan grabbed his hand in front of Uncle, but the earlier concern about being physically affectionate seemed to have dissipated. He squeezed A-Yuan's hand and said, "Come on, let's go wait at the table while Wangji-ge gets the food ready again. It shouldn't take long."
He started to tow A-Yuan towards the dining area just off the kitchen from where they were standing in the living room, ushering him towards taking a seat.
