Mingjue checked the jack stand on Meng Yao's side and nodded. Then he went back to the jack and said, "Now I turn it to the other setting, which lowers it, and take the jack out, so the jack stands can hold up the car."
He did that, not bothering to completely lower the jack, and placed it well out of their way to retrieve later to finish lowering the car when they were done. The car was settled on the jack stands with enough space under it to easily slide under with the creeper. As he worked, he said, "If I ask you your ulterior motive and you don't want to tell me, I run the chance of you lying to me about it because you feel pressured to tell me something. If I don't ask, and just observe, either you'll eventually tell me because you want to, or I'll eventually figure it out."
He gave Meng Yao a look and said, "Do you want to use the creeper first to look at the underside of the engine block and see what you can spot about what's going on under there from your book knowledge? If anything's out of place or if you're concerned about any of it?"

Meng Yao grinned at his assessment. "I think you kind of already know that if you don't ask, I'm more likely to tell you. Honestly, even if you did ask, I couldn't answer you. When you offered me your brother's shirt, my motives were different than when you offered me a ride home, and those motives don't apply now. I think my only motive at this exact moment, aside from one: learning to work on cars, two: possibly get a dumpling recipe out of you and three: you accepting me calling you Mingjue-ge is to get you to acknowledge that you're adorable." He punctuated the last word by tapping Minjue on the nose.
"I'll go first," he said, getting on the creeper and sliding himself under the car. "Also, I commend you on your book smarts shade you sprinkled back there," he called out from under the car. "The exhaust system looks toast, the wiring is absolute chaos, and I'm pretty sure her brake lines have been chewed through by mice. Hopefully before this came to my house." He slid out from under the car, "I'm sure there's a lot more to do, but that's what I got with a quick look."

Mingjue waited for Meng Yao to extricate himself before taking his place, sliding under the car. The first few times he'd done this, it had felt horribly claustrophobic, but he was used to it now. He looked over what Meng Yao had commented on and said, "I'd want to try to adjust the exhaust system before declaring it completely toast. It looks like it's mostly misaligned, but might be fixable. If it's not, that's another one of those sets of parts that Ford used on all its cars around this era, so an easy enough swap out. I'd guess that it was rats, not mice, and you'd know if you had rats, or at least that something was wrong because their piss stinks. Mice don't generally have enough jaw strength to go through that."
He took more time looking over the wiring, tracing various things and checking on how they connected. He said, "The wires on the other hand just look chaotic because of a poorly organized battery replacement at some point and upgrading to a higher performance 312 engine like the ones used in the '57 model. They didn't tie off their wires neatly, but everything's connected correctly. It's a Thunderbird engine, but not the original one that came in the car."
He looked over other things that tended to be off and said, "At some point, someone who owned this car drove through either a lot of snow with salt or sand on it or just drove a lot in sandy areas. There's pitting on a lot of the pans on the bottom, and some of those might want to get replaced just to make sure that everything stays protected. Also, I have a suspicion looking at this that some of the hoses are old and need replaced, but that just happens with hoses."
He slid back out and said, "Can't tell how the transmission and the fan are until we get other stuff working or pull and test them, but I think that the next few steps are going to be removing the panels that are going to need replacing and see if the battery will hold a charge and if so, use that, and if not, hook the engine up to an external battery and see if it's functional."

Meng Yao thought about the wiring. He'd been comparing what was under the car to the 55 schematic. He sifted through his memories and swapped it out for a 57 schematic, "you're right, the wiring is right, just a hot mess."
"Show me how to remove one panel and I'll do the rest... assuming it doesn't take Herculean arm strength." He grinned, "I can shimmy under the car without the creeper to watch how you do it." He suppressed a laugh when using creeper in a sentence.
"Do you often get angry?" he dropped, not so casually.

Mingjue said from under the car, "For some of the floor panels to come off, we'll need to lift the other end of the car later. I'll show you how to take of the pans and floor panels though."
He had a moment of concern fore Meng Yao getting under the car without the creeper, but they were on a nice smooth garage floor, not the street or a parking lot, and Meng Yao was nimble and pretty small. He said, "Before you come under here though, grab me the small red case in the tool box that has a ratcheting screwdriver and wrench set. It's going to be needed for getting the panels off. It doesn't take a lot of strength, but it takes the right tool, also not dropping panels on top of yourself. They aren't particularly heavy, but they are often gross."
He was startled by Meng Yao's question, but he replied, "Not terribly often, not as often as I used to for sure. I've learned how to control my temper over the years. I tend to get angry when I see people being unfair to others, or hurting others. It's something I find hard to detach myself from."

Meng Yao retrieved the red case and shimmied under the car with Mingjue. "Here you are," he said handing over the case. "I'm planning to shower before I go into work anyway, so as long as I don't bruise myself, things should be fine."
"Did your best friend help you with the anger? What's hard to detach from? People or the situations?" He knew he was prying, but if Mingjue was willing to talk about it, he wanted to learn.

Mingjue took the case from Meng Yao and fished out the right attachment to the wrench by feel, fishing the bit out and saying, "It's the third one from the left in this set, I'll tell you what size that actually is when we're out in better light."
He pointed out the bolts where the floor panels were held down and said, "We're going to have to undo all of these. there are ones at each corner on all of them, some of them have extra ones though, either in the middle or down longer edges. Because you're under them when we're doing this, you either move around out of the way so you just drop them on the ground, or you put your hand under them and hold them up while you're getting the last one off, and then scoot it off over you so that you don't drop it on yourself."
He undid the first one and then handed the tool to Meng Yao, saying, "It's a ratchet tool, if you've not used one, you use a levering motion, so you turn it about a quarter of the way, bring the handle back and then do it again, but it only turns the wrench one way until you reverse the spin direction."
He was a little wary about continuing the conversation about his temper, but he said, "Xichen has a very soothing presence, so yes, he helped. He also definitely held me back from getting in fist fights several times in high school, which was for the best. He also encouraged me to actually work with a professional about it, which also helped. And it's hard to detach from situations enough to look at them more objectively. Anger isn't a very clear to think through emotion. I wouldn't want to detach from people, that's not healthy either."

"I think I prefer the hold and scoot off me method," Meng Yao said, taking the tool from him and looking it over before returning it.
He filed away the name Xichen. They went to the same school, worked in the same club, could they really know the same Xichen? Meng Yao decided to keep that information to himself, wanting to compare Mingjue's friend to the man he knew. "I'm glad you worked with a professional. Anger is definitely a hard one to get through. You run so hot or cold in it that thinking doesn't really come into the equation at all."

Mingjue quickly finished unfastening the panel after Meng Yao handed back the tool, catching the fasteners as they came loose. He said, "Also, important to note, keep track of everything you detach from a car. If you think about it before hand, you can bring a ziplock with you to store these, otherwise, if you don't want to just hold them and a tool, you can always stick them in your pocket if you need to."
When the whole thing was detached, he slid it sideways out from under the car and deposited it on the garage floor. He asked, "Are you ready to try it?"
He said, "Anger is a part of me, and it's a feeling that I tend to feel intensely and deeply, but it doesn't make very good decisions, so I've learned to outwait it and figure out decisions after the initial overwhelming feeling occurs. It probably also helps not being a teenager anymore."

Meng Yao watched Mingjue detach the panel, "overalls, I've got a ton of pockets," he cupped Mingjue's hand in his own to make sure to capture everything he'd detached from the car, then deposited them into one of his pockets.
He took the ratchet from him and scooted his way under another panel, mimicking Mingjue's example. He made sure to gather everything he removed and add it to his pocket. As he ratcheted one bolt loose, some black liquid began to drip down, almost directly into his face. Meng Yao moved as quickly as he could, but due to the limited space beneath the car, still got a faceful. He shook his head, trying to dispel the liquid.
"I think I found the oil... or something," he sputtered, not that any had gotten into his mouth, but it had been a near miss. "Towels, plastic baggies and towels when I work on cars," he had screwed his eyes shut because he knew if he opened them, he'd get whatever that stuff was into them.
He started to shimmy his way out from under the car but paused. The liquid had surprised him and he'd shaken his head and tried to avoid it, so with his eyes shut, he wasn't sure of his orientation under the car. He didn't want to accidentally knock out a jack stand and die. "Help..." he said meekly, hating to ask for it but knowing he was beat.

Mingjue pulled a bandanna out of his pocket and reached over to wipe the worst of the oil off Meng Yao's face gently, paying attention especially to the area around eyes and mouth. He said, "You did, indeed, find an oil leak. Carrying a cloth is useful."
He put the bandanna in one of Meng Yao's hands and grabbed his wrist loosely, scooting out from under the car and guiding Meng Yao out.
He said, "I can walk you in to a place that you can wash your face better if you don't feel safe opening your eyes. Are you OK?"

Meng Yao closed his mouth tightly and tried not to be frustrated with himself or jerk away when Mingjue wiped his face. He did not like being mothered or babied, it was one of his pet peeves, but he knew the other man had no way of knowing that.
He let himself be guided out from under the car and sat up, wiping his face more with the bandana. "I think I can get back to the sink on my own," he said as he stood up. He made his way to the door back to the house and grabbed for the handle, eyes still closed, "I'll be back once I wipe this off."

Mingjue saw Meng Yao tensing up and while he continued to hover a little bit watching in case Meng Yao lost his balance or got turned around, he held himself back from pushing Meng Yao to accept his help. The other man clearly liked to take care of himself when he could.
Mingjue stayed hovering at the door in from the garage, watching to make sure that everything was alright. He said softly, "I'm sorry about the oil. Stuff like that does happen sometimes. I'll get that panel off once you're ready to go back out there, and it sounds like we'll need to replace the oil tank."
He wasn't sure if Meng Yao would want to keep working on the car today.

Meng Yao made his way to his kitchen sink. He knew his own house well enough that he had no trouble with the trip, even with eyes closed. He leaned over the sink and washed his face. As he dried it, he turned back to see Mingjue hovering in the doorway.
"It's not your fault the oil was there, and I'm fine," he stopped at a closet before he came back, grabbing a few towels. "How do I get that panel off without getting another face full of oil? Also, I'm pretty sure I left the ratchet under the car... sorry."

Mingjue was relieved to see that Meng Yao was, in fact, fine. He said, "Don't worry about the ratchet tool. We'll fetch it and we need to keep using it under there anyhow. It's not going to wander off on it's own."
He nodded to Meng Yao's questions and said, "Actually, by having to take a little break, you've already done the first step of dealing with the problem because you've let it drain some. Generally, if I hit a spot like that, I'll undo enough sides that it can drain out properly, and then wipe up the mess a little because there will be a mess, and then take it the rest of the way off once it was done leaking. If you want, I can get under there and set it up to drain and we can work on some of the side panels that need to come off. After that so there's not as much under the car work."
He realized belatedly and added, "Also, I don't know where we are on your time schedule. I've lost track of the time a bit."
