Mingjue shrugged, withdrawing his hand once Meng Yao was done examining it, and said, "That's what everyone at the mechanic's shop that I go to calls them, so unless they were all pulling an elaborate prank on me for years, that's at least a name for them. I think that the idea is that they allow you to creep under the car, it does sound odd though, now that I actually think about it."
Mingjue had to think about why Meng Yao was surprised by him being unbothered by the pole. He shrugged and said, "I mean, I know where you work, and that you're a good dancer. It doesn't surprise me that you practice. And part of the reason that the boss hired me when I was freshly twenty-one is that I wasn't interested in the dancers as anything other than people who I was going to look out for. He'd gotten sick of bouncers he had to fire because they messed with the dancers. I'm not sure it was luck so much as part of what he was looking for in someone to hire."
He focused on eating dumplings instead of dignifying the "adorable" with a response.

"I believe you when you say they're called creepers, I just can't get over someone saying something like, 'give me a second to get the creeper out of my trunk' or 'I've got a creeper in my garage,' with a straight face. I'd lose my mind," Meng Yao said, grinning.
He shook his head at how practical the other man was, "you take the fun out of teasing you, you know. It means I have to try harder," he grabbed another dumpling, dipped it and held it up to the other man's lips. He pressed his lips into a thin line, trying to suppress his laughter and preparing for some kind of reaction to the action.

Mingjue shrugged at Meng Yao's commentary on the name of the tool. He figured that he'd be more likely to be using it than talking about it anyhow.
When Meng Yao held the dumpling up to him to eat while talking about teasing him, Mingjue stared at the dumpling for a long while, considering. He honestly wasn't sure what to think about this. On the one hand, he'd not had someone feed him with chopsticks since he was a child. The one time he'd been sick enough since that someone else had had to feed him, he'd been strictly having foods that one ate from a spoon. He had the sneaking suspicion that this was flirting, at least a little. On the other hand, his gut feeling wasn't that it was actually that weird or awful to just eat it, after all, he'd made the dumplings for the two of them to eat. As his thoughts chased themselves around in his head, he wondered if he'd taken too long to react, just staring at the dumpling.
He gave a tiny confused sigh, shrugged again, and ate the offered dumpling, giving Meng Yao a quick, searching look as though trying to figure out his motivations. He then carefully took a dumpling with his own chopsticks and deposited it on Meng Yao's plate, saying, "As a replacement."

Meng Yao wrinkled his nose excitedly. "I know you don't believe me when I say it, but that really was adorable." He picked up the dumpling Mingjue has given him and dipped and ate it with a happy sigh.
"Seriously, your cooking is no joke," he said, eyes closed enjoying the dumpling. The dumpling was so good that Meng Yao actually forgot to flirt and was just genuinely enjoying the food. He never forgot to flirt.
"Huaisang should be honored to have this whenever he wants." He leaned back in his seat, "oh yeah!" He reached across the table to another chair and grabbed the bag with Huaisang's shirt. "It's been dry cleaned; thank you for letting me borrow it. You're a life saver."

Mingjue shook his head and said, "I believe that you believe that, though I'm not sure that I believe you."
He did smile when Meng Yao complimented his cooking. He said, "I've practiced cooking a lot. I started learning from Huaisang's mom when I was pretty young. I've been doing pretty much all the cooking for my family since I was about fourteen, and I like it when my own food tastes good."
They were getting near the end of the dumplings, and Mingjue asked, "Do you want to show me the car once we're done?"
He was curious to see this car. He'd not worked on a lot of old fords, but it was definitely an interesting car, and he was excited to work on it.

"Challenge accepted. That just means I need to make you believe me, then you'll suddenly have to admit that you're adorable," Meng Yao said, laughing.
He took the second to last dumpling and gestured to the leftover one, "that one's yours, and yes, I'll show you the car when we're done." He bit into and savored his last dumpling.
"I should warn you though, she's in rough shape. She was hauled out of a junkyard, so she's rusty and needs a lot of love," he thought about it a little, "I might even need to look up some antique stores to see if they have any parts for her."

Mingjue shook his head eating the last dumpling without saying anything more on the topic. He carefully closed up all the containers and tucked them away in the bag that he'd carried them in. He figured that he would bring it back out to the car along with Huaisang's shirt when they went out to get the tools.
He said, "Cars like that just make the process of restoring them even more exciting. As far as parts go, more than antique shops, you're going to want to look up local hobbyist groups that restore cars. That being said, to make it road worthy and safe, you might want to look into upgrading some of the insides to more recent parts. It's your car, so it will be your call, but it's something to think about."
He stood up once everything was tidily arranged and said, "Alright, show me to your car to start her inspection."

Meng Yao watched as Mingjue packed things up neatly, "You like order, don't you Mingjue-ge?"
He stood up and fixed his overalls to make sure they were falling right, then went to the door leading to the garage. He opened the door with a flourish and turned on the light, revealing the car. Boy, was she in a sorry state.
"I'm pretty sure some of the floor has rotted out, so I know that'll be a big thing," he walked into the garage and popped the hood, propping it up, "I honestly don't even know where to start."

Mingjue agreed softly, "Yes, I like things being organized."
When they entered the garage, Mingjue started by taking in the state of the car. In some ways, it wasn't as bad as Meng Yao had made it out to be. He said, "Well, I've got at least one piece of reassurance for you. The two hardest things to replace or fix on Thunderbirds, the fenders and bumpers, at in good overall shape at least from looking at it here. The rust is a concern, and we're going to probably have to replace some panels because of it, but you can get your hands on those. Some of the smaller areas though are just surface level, and we can clean them off and give it a fresh paint job, which will inhibit more rust."
He didn't move to the hood right away, though he did pause briefly and point out a small plate near the fan in the engine bay, saying, "That's got the VIN* on it, and we can use that to look up original information on the car if you've not already."
He carefully made his way around the car, inspecting the doors, top, and inside, noting what would likely need replacing or repairing, and what was in good shape. He was pretty sure that the car had been well maintained for many years before it became a salvage.
Finally, he finished circling the car and took a look under the hood. He said, "Well, the good news is that it doesn't look like anything's actually missing. Though some of it may straight up need to be replaced. There are a decent number of parts for just about everything that can be gotten for this car though, so replacing things will be possible. How close to original versus souping it up do you want to aim for?"

Meng Yao leaned against the wall, arms crossed in front of his chest as he watched Mingjue circle the vehicle. The other man was genuinely interested and cared, that gave Meng Yao some pause. He knew he'd started all this with the teasing and the insistence for a 'date' but seeing Mingjue actually invested in helping him was...nice. Nice was weird.
Being a shameless flirt, the only sort of helping he normally did or received involved fewer clothes and more cardio. This was... nice. Nice was not normally what he did.
He stepped forward and sidled up next to the other man now under the hood, "believe it or not, I kind of like the rust. As much as I'd love to see her strutting her stuff proudly at car show, I kind of like rust." He pursed his lips, "I mean, think about it. People are really good at hiding their scars and flaws with makeup and bravado and confidence, that's like a new coat of paint. It doesn't change the fact that the rust is or was there. I'm proud of her rust."

Mingjue listened to what Meng Yao said about the rust carefully. He said, "I get what you're saying. There's a reason that I don't bother with the blistered or peeling paint on my car, just check for rust regularly. And also why I'm not going to bother with little dents most of the time, just check for structural integrity. There's a problem with rust though."
He pointed out a spot on the frame that had just a little bit of surface level rust, "This seems harmless enough. It's just on the surface and isn't causing any structural harm, so maybe we don't bother with it."
He pointed to a spot where the rust had eaten through a panel and that panel would need to be replaced, "But because rust is an oxidation, it spreads, so that harmless rust turns into something like this if you don't deal with it while it's still surface level. It's more like an infection or rot or mold than like a scar. And you need to treat those things so that they don't hurt you or a house or whatever."
He tapped a place where the metal was dented slightly on the frame, "Now this, this is just cosmetic. If you want the car to have battle wounds, we could totally just leave that there, and it wouldn't cause the car any further harm."
He glanced at Meng Yao again and said, "The fresh paint, even if it's just a clear gloss, helps protect the car from rust. It seals the moisture out and keeps the metal safe from oxidation. So using my car as an example. I keep clear gloss at home so that if some of the peeling paint starts actually exposing metal, I can slap a little on so that it doesn't run the risk of rusting. One time, when I was on a several day trip with Huaisang, and some paint chipped because of a little bit of gravel that flew up and hit the car, I had to use his nail polish."

Meng Yao followed Mingjue around the car, taking note of the spots and lessons he was teaching. "Okay, I understand. So I'd like to fix the rotten parts but leave the character parts."
He ran his fingers over one of the larger dents on the passenger-side door, "though if possible, I'd like to get this one out, it's a little too big for my liking." The dent in question was person sized, Meng Yao sized to be exact.
He turned back to Mingjue, "I didn't know they had clear coats for cars too! Yes, that sounds perfect. Also.... should you be using nail polish on a car, it sounds.... corrosive."

Mingjue nodded at the dent that Meng Yao had indicated and said, "Even if you hadn't specifically said you wanted to, I'd have probably wanted to get that one out because that much of a dent on a door makes me worry about the door buckling under the wrong circumstances. I'm not sure if we'll be able to undent that one or need to replace that door, but doors are one of the replaceable parts. The same door was used on a bunch of different '55 models of Fords, so finding replacements isn't that bad."
He laughed at Meng Yao's nail polish question and said, "Nail polish remover would be a bad idea, it would mess with the paint, but nail polish is actually one of the common mechanic's tricks for small dings in paint as a short term method. It's not that dissimilar from a lot of the gloss paints you use on cars. Tends to flake away more easily, but that's not as much a concern when it's a short term fix."
He tapped the top of the car and asked, "Did you want to go with a cloth top or a removable hard top on it long term? The originals came with either or both, and they were easy enough to swap out."
He was pretty sure that he'd seen what he needed to on the car itself without actually getting equipment to test things. He'd want to check if the various parts still worked, but he figured that at least the battery would probably need to be swapped out. Putting some fluids in the car would be a good first check to see if anything was leaking. He realized that he might have a slightly more exciting job on his hands than he'd originally realized and asked, "Did you manage to get the car with a key for the ignition? I can work around it if you don't, but it would be useful in testing the functionality of certain parts of the car if you did."

Meng Yao was happy that Mingjue had decided to not state the obvious regarding the dent. "Note to self, carry around more nail polish," he grinned, slipping back into his old flirtatious role.
"I think the cloth top is much sexier, don't you?" he sauntered back towards the door to the house, swaying his hips for fun and grabbed a set of keys. "I have them, lucky find, right?" He realized that finding a car in a junkyard with keys was a little farfetched. Hopefully he didn't ask about the title, he had that too.

Mingjue nodded about the keys being a lucky find. He asked, "Have you ever tried starting her? With the keys? Even if it didn't work, that doesn't mean that there's actually anything wrong with the engine or other important parts, if everything else around it is dead and it doesn't have the right fluids, but it's a good data point."
He contemplated the other issues that could be present with the car and asked, "Did you get it with a salvage title considering you got it hauled from a junkyard? Most of them will issue those."
Mingjue had no idea about the sexiness factor of the different types of tops to the car, so he focused on the practicalities. He said, "I'm not sure how sexiness factors as a concern, but they do come with different practical values. It's easier for a cloth top to get damaged, but if you regularly want to go back and forth between having the top up and having it down, it is much easier to quickly transition between the two settings. The hard top is useful in terms of being sturdy, but if it breaks, it's harder to do maintenance on and often just needs to be replaced. That being said, if we were in a place that rained a lot, I might recommend having both to be able to put the hard top on during the rainy season. The cloth tops have more fiddly maintenance, and you have to get the cloth replaced sometimes, but it's certainly easier to handle issues with on a case by case basis at home."
