Mingjue didn't look straight at Meng Yao, instead focusing on his own hands again, as he tried to formulate a response. He started speaking slowly, like he was still feeling out what he was saying as he went, "You're right. I don't let people in or trust them easily. It takes a while for me to get close to someone enough to feel like I can trust them, and sometimes even then, I'm wary for a long while. And honestly, most of the time, I don't bother to try to get close to people. I have my brother, and Xichen, and outside of that, I've not really felt the need for a huge number of other people in my life."
He wanted something to fidget with, but there wasn't anything obviously handy. He instead slowly clenched the hand that Meng Yao was done with into a fist and then relaxed it, paying attention to the feeling of the muscles as they moved and letting that help him stay calm. Mingjue didn't like feeling emotions about this sort of thing, but Meng Yao had been remarkably honest with him, Mingjue could tell, and Mingjue himself was in general straightforward in telling people things. He just didn't venture into this territory often.
He said, "I had friends in university the first time. A decent number of them in my program and who I'd taken classes with or done activities with. And then when I dropped out to take care of my little brother, even though I live only a few blocks from campus and was regularly doing stuff on campus, they all just kind of disappeared on me. Xichen was the only person who stuck around, and I'd been friends with him since high school, and he was still finishing up his senior year of high school when I had to make the decision that it would be my last quarter. We were never actually in undergrad at the same time. But that last bit of the quarter, he'd do things like pick my little brother up from school for me, and not a single one of those college friends who were actually adults, in college, seemed to even consider those sorts of things when I told them what happened."
He felt like it was strange telling this to Meng Yao, but he did want the other man to understand that he wasn't trying to push him away, he was just approaching very cautiously. He said, "I've gotten used to people who I thought that I could rely on an care about leaving me one way or another, so I take a lot of care about who and how I let people that close. My birth mother, my dad's first wife, she left with no explanation when I was five, I didn't even know that she was going to leave until like a week after she'd packed and left. Mom, my step-mom, she got sick and died when I was fifteen, and then dad died when I was nineteen, and that was another way of people that I'd relied on basically vanishing on me. It's made it hard for me to rely on people."
He fidgeted in his spot a little bit and said, "I'm not trying to push you away. But it's going to take a while for me to fully trust letting you closer. I haven't even tried making friends at all in a while. Because I had my brother and Xichen, and anyone else seemed like effort, and yes, it was kind of frightening. And on top of that, I seemed to intimidate a lot of people, and lot of the others who tried to get closer to me seemed to want something out of me that I wasn't interested in. So I stopped trying at all."
He felt like he'd said too much again. He wasn't sure what the right thing to say was though. Saying, no you don't scare me, would have been a lie, and Mingjue tried not to do that.

Meng Yao looked at Mingjue's other hand, clenching and unclenching, "It sounds like we're alone, together. Both not trusting the other for different reasons, but still here."
As he pressed a pressure point he said, "I'm sorry about your mother and your parents and what you had to go through. That can't have been easy. And I'm sorry people are terrible and they left you when you needed them. I'm not going to sit here and lie to you and say I'm trustworthy. You've already sussed out that my relationships are transactional. I just don't know what I want from you yet."
He pressed another pressure point, "that sounded shadier than I meant. I told you my intentions have constantly been changing when it comes to you, and at this very moment, I don't understand them myself. Much like you don't seem to like lying, I don't like it either, I can do it, but I don't care for it."
He set down Mingjue's hand, finished with the manicure process and looked into his eyes, "you're scared of me, and to be honest, you scare me too. Not in the large, quiet, muscular guy way, but the, I don't know what I'm doing with you kind of way."

Mingjue said softly, "Thank you, for being honest about that."
He sighed and added, "When I offer to do things for you, or help you with things, I don't want anything from you. I like doing things to help people. I don't do it for some reward or repayment, and if I want payment for something, I'd ask for it before I did that thing."
He actually looked at Meng Yao now, trying to get a feeling for how the other man was reacting. He added, "I have enjoyed your company so far. You're interesting to talk to, so it's been worth the effort to step out of my comfort zone a bit."

Meng Yao grinned at Mingjue, a far more relaxed grin than he usually wore. "I'll keep that in mind. No payment necessary."
He started to gather the tools he used, "I've enjoyed your company too. Thank you for stepping out of your comfort zone, I've had a lot of fun." He brought the tools and placed them in the sink and came back to retrieve the bowl of water.
"Next time is my turn. You can make me do something outside my comfort zone, if you can find something," he grinned mischievously.

A thought crossed Mingjue's mind for a moment, and he pondered it. There was definitely the feeling of potential for friendship here. It was kind of frightening, and uncertain, but Meng Yao had been surprisingly willing to be honest with him, and surprisingly willing to be patient.
Mingjue said, still a little unsure, "Hey, would you want to have lunch on campus at some point so that I could introduce you to Xichen? If we're going to keep hanging around each other, and trying this whole friendship thing, it would feel weird for the two of you to not know each other."

Meng Yao brought the bowl of water to the sink and turned back to Mingjue, "we have a promise of a third date next Friday and now you're inviting me to a threesome?"
He hung his head and groaned at himself in frustration, "sorry, apparently we've momentarily reached my quota of seriousness, so I had to make an inappropriate flirtatious comment. Yes, I would love to meet you and your friend on campus for lunch."

Mingjue rolled his eyes at Meng Yao. He said, "I'll text you about schedules. What days are you on campus and free around lunch time? Having that as the basics will help me figure out what days to even ask about in coordinating something."
He figured that Meng Yao was probably going to need to get ready for work fairly soon, but he knew that Meng Yao had set an alarm, and clearly the other man had wanted him to stick around for a while longer.
He was glad that Meng Yao was OK with the idea of meeting Xichen though. It would have made him more antsy about this if he wasn't.

Meng Yao turned back to the sink and started cleaning the tools and bowl, "I'm free for lunch every weekday. I get super cranky without food, so I make sure I've got a lunch break."
He finished cleaning the tools and put them in the dishwasher so they could be sterilized. He walked back over to the couch and sat down, "more lemonade?" he asked, holding up the pitcher. He nearly spilled it as his phone startled him when it started going off.
"Jesus... sorry," he said, putting down the pitcher and looking around to see if he spilled. Seeing he hadn't he pulled his phone out, "my alarm," he showed Mingjue the phone with the alarm going off before silencing it.

Mingjue couldn't help but let out a small laugh when he saw Meng Yao's reaction to his alarm. He said, "I'll just gather up my things and let you start getting yourself ready to go. I would have loved to stay for more lemonade if you had the time, but I don't want to be responsible for making you late."
He added, "I had a good time, even if it got a little weird in places. I'm looking forward to next Friday, and hopefully for seeing you for lunch between now and then."
He started collecting his bag that he'd carried the food in, Huaisang's shirt, and his emergency clothing bag. Making sure that he'd not somehow left something that belonged in one of them out. It wasn't like he didn't know where to find Meng Yao if he had, but he didn't like leaving a mess.

"Weird? When?" Meng Yao teased, switching off his alarm.
"I know you said you'd leave the jack and stands and creeper.. in my garage" he couldn't help but continue making that word into something weird, it was just too fun for him, "but do you need the tools? Or did you already grab them? I don't want you to need them for your car and discover you've left them in my garage."

Mingjue said, "Oh, no those can stay too. I've got a much more complete set at home, and I've got a smaller toolbox that lives in the care for emergency tool situations."
He added, just in case Meng Yao wanted him to get them out of the way, "I can take them with me if you'd rather not have them lying around out there. Though I did get everything back in the toolbox."
He hesitated by the door, holding his things. He wasn't quite sure how saying goodbye worked with Meng Yao yet.

Meng Yao shook his head, "nope, they can stay, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't holding onto something you needed."
He started gathering the lemonade and glasses, turning to Mingjue and quirking his head. "Not sure how to disengage?"
He grinned and shifted the glasses and pitcher into one arm so he could dramatically wave his other arm out in front of him, "parting is such sweet sorrow," he mused in an over-acted Shakespearean voice. He chuckled at himself, "text me, and don't be a stranger, okay?"

Mingjue gave a small sheepish smile. He gave Meng Yao a small wave from where he was standing near the door and said, "I'll text you. See you soon."
He headed out the door. Loading his things into his trunk and making a mental note to refill his emergency clothes bag.
He sat down in his car and quickly texted Xichen, "I think it went well. I'll tell you more this evening. Do you want to meet my friend sometime this week for lunch?"
He figured that he could discuss the details over feeding Xichen dinner if his friend ended up showing up that evening. It was a nice sort of feeling having spent the afternoon with someone who was turning into a friend, probably, and knowing that he would likely see Xichen in the evening.
