After the previous night driving Meng Yao home and all that conversation. Mingjue was intently relived that it was Thursday, or the day that was reserved for his noon-time meal with Xichen on campus. It wasn't like they didn't see each other at other times, but Thursdays at noon, they always met at the on campus cafe, just the two of them. It was breakfast for Mingjue and lunch for Xichen, and it was when they always were sure to be able to catch up on their weeks.
Mingjue had woken up a little bit earlier than he needed to, so he'd headed over to campus a little bit early, enjoying a stroll. He'd texted Xichen to let him know that he was getting there about fifteen minutes early and would go find them a table once he got his own food.
The selection at the cafe wasn't amazing, but they had good sandwiches, and they had reasonably good tea. Most importantly, it had always been convenient for both of them, even over the years when Mingjue wasn't taking classes. He settled at a corner table with his sandwich and tea and waited for his best friend to appear, knowing that Xichen would be full of questions about him mentioning making a friend in his text the night before.

Xichen was happy today was Thursday because he was desperately curious to find out more about this friend Mingjue had made. He'd never heard about Mingjue making friends. He thought about barraging Mingjue with texts, but by the time he looked at his phone, it was already morning and he would be seeing his friend soon enough anyway.
He had gotten the message that Mingjue was going to be early, but he had been studying in the library and lost track of time until there was only about ten minutes before their meeting time. He rushed to pack up and headed to the cafe. He ordered some tea and a sandwich before looking around for where Mingjue had sat, finding him easily and dropping his stuff off at the table across from the other man. "Hello." Xichen said simply, giving him a smile. He held up a finger as if to say 'hold that thought' as his ordered was called, and returned a minute later with food and drink in tow.
He set it down on the table and sat down, giving Mingjue a sly smile, "I hope you're well." He began, not giving Mingjue time to answer before adding, "I'd like to know all about this new friend."

Mingjue grinned up at Xichen as his best friend came to join him at the table. He said, "Glad you're here, it's been a weird week."
He wasn't surprised that one of the first things out of Xichen's mouth was asking about this friend. Mingjue's face flickered through uncertainty and confusion, and he told Xichen, "There's this guy who works at the club I work for. Turns out he's a Stanford student too. I gave him a ride home yesterday, and he's, um, he's pretty good at having a conversation, and actually wanted to spend time with me outside of work."
He took a bite of his sandwich to cover his confused rambling for a minute and said, "He was flirting with me, which I only know because he told me so, which should have been super awkward, and kind of was, but ended up less awkward than it could have been because he took the idea that I just wasn't interested really well and focused on talking about other things."
He grumbled, "The entire thing was very confusing."
He gave Xichen a bit of a smile and said, "How's your week been?"

Xichen gave his friend a knowing smile, "Oh really? It seems like you found another person who enjoys spending time with you. But you know," he wiggled a finger teasingly at Mingjue, "making friends really isn't supposed to be confusing." He leaned back, letting out a sigh as he thought over his week. "Oh, you know, the usual, don't seem to have time to think outside of school work. I was working on it before coming here and almost ended up late, so sorry about that." He said, adding the apology as an afterthought.

Mingjue grumbled, "You say that, but you've got significantly more practice at it than I do."
He sighed and tried to find the way to explain to Xichen why it was so confusing, and finally he said, "There's been enough people over the years who haven't wanted to spend time in my company, or wanted to until they realized that I really really wasn't interested in dating them, or ditched me after I dropped out of Stanford to take care of Huaisang that I'm still a little suspicious about anything like this, which probably isn't the best attitude to have when trying to make friends."
He took another bite of his sandwich before adding, "I'll have to introduce him to you if he actually keeps trying to hang out with me. Let you see what you think of him. You get people better than I do."
Mingjue smiled sympathetically at Xichen. His best friend kept himself very busy with school, enough so that Mingjue sometimes wondered if he was trying to distract himself from something else. He asked, "Have you seen Wangji lately? How is he?"
He knew that spending time with his little brother was important to Xichen, but unlike Mingjue and Huaisang who still lived in the same home, Xichen didn't just see Wangji around the house anymore.

"I suppose so." Xichen replied lightheartedly.
"Those people just weren't worthy of being your friends." He said matter-of-factly. He was trying to keep the conversation light, but he knew what Mingjue meant. His friend had been through a lot over the years, and it was only natural to become suspicious of someone after being betrayed over and over by people you thought were friends.
He smiled and nodded, "Yes, I'd like to meet him if he ends up being close with you. Maybe we can all hang out together."
He looked off into the distance as he tried to think of the last time he had seen his little brother. "I think it's actually been a little over... two-ish weeks since we last saw each other in person. He seems to be doing alright. He got a new roommate in his dorm recently, but I think that's going to go just fine for him." He said, smiling a bit at the memory of that conversation. "Seems like he's been keeping busy, too. I should probably try to find time to meet up with him again at some point..." He said, rambling by the end.

Mingjue had heard Xichen say that before, but he wasn't entirely sure he believed it. He probably could have done many things to be a better friend, and some of it was just the natural drifting of not doing the same things anymore. Most of his friends had been Xichen's friends first to begin with.
Mingjue admitted, almost sheepishly, "I'm going over to his place tomorrow afternoon. He's got a car that he wants help working on, and I was going to bring over food. I'll let you know how that goes."
Mingjue felt like it was a bit of a weird just starting to be friends thing to do, like he didn't know intermediate stage friend steps. He hoped that Xichen wouldn't tell him that he was doing friend stages badly. He relied on Xichen's expertise for this sort of thing.
When Xichen admitted that he'd not seen Wangji in a while, Mingjue gently scolded, "I know you care about seeing him regularly a lot, and he relies on you a lot too. You should text him and arrange something. Have lunch or dinner on campus some day. Have you not been going to your family's Saturday dinners lately?"
He was mildly worried for how busy Xichen was if that was the case. He reached out and touched Xichen's hand gently and asked, "Is something really really overwhelming you with school? Or something else?"

"Oh?" Xichen chirped, raising an eyebrow, "You just met and already have plans to meet again? That sounds like friendship to me." He said approvingly. "It also sounds like you two hit it off and have at least one thing in common, which is good." He added. He had little interest in cars, and so he was happy Mingjue found someone else to talk with about them.
He frowned slightly as the conversation was directed toward him, and let out a small sigh. "I have two teachers that suddenly decided to make massive projects count for over half our grade, and although I did not slack on doing them, they are due soon and I feel like I was not given enough time. I feel bad for the people that have procrastinated until now. But no, I've been grabbing food and eating in my room, which does not make Uncle happy, but he understood when I started that graduate school would demand my time and I would have to make some sacrifices. I'm hoping once these projects are over with I will have more time again, but based on these teacher's track records, I'm going to have very a study intensive semester..." He explained, punctuating his conversation with another, more tired sigh. He added as an afterthought, "I will probably message him after I leave you to set up a day to meet up on campus. I understand why he wanted to live in the dorms, but I miss my didi because of it."

Mingjue scowled at Xichen's description of what the professors had decided to do. He said, "Changing a project like that to be suddenly way more work is very frustrating. I'm sorry that they did that to you."
He was glad that Xichen agreed that he would try to meet up with Wangji though. He knew that it would be very off for him if he went that long without seeing Huaisang, and Xichen had a similar level of closeness and attachment to his little brother.
He sighed again over Xichen's assessment of his interactions with Meng Yao and said, "I think that we hit it off. I feel like I can't be entirely sure that I'm not just a passing bit of amusement that will be forgotten in a few weeks. I don't think that he's actually said or done anything to make me think that, but it's definitely been floating around my head."
He looked thoughtfully at Xichen and said, "It sounds like you've not been eating as well as you should. Do you want to come over to my place for dinner sometime this week? I can make sure that you've got study space set up, and we can study quietly together, but with better food than you'd get just grabbing something and going back to your room."
It was partially selfish as a request, he wanted to spend more time with Xichen, and school and work had been getting in the way, but he was also pretty sure that it would help his friend out.

"The joys of grad school, I suppose." Xichen said, forced cheerfulness obvious enough to show he was being sarcastic.
He liked talking about Mingjue making a new friend much more than talking about school, because when he thought about school, he became stressed. His smile faltered at Mingjue mentioning this new friend losing interest in a few weeks. "Since it's happened before, it's hard to trust the part of you that says it won't happen this time. That's understandable, and you should tackle those feelings head on." He knew talking about feelings was never Mingjue's strong point, but he figured he'd give the advice anyway. He only hoped this new friend wouldn't prove him right and get bored and leave him after a few weeks. Nothing better to harden a heart than to prove anxieties true, after all.
His smile returned at the offer to eat dinner together. "I would really love that." He said softly. He always loved spending time with Mingjue, and for as much as Huaisang was a strange kid, he was still cute, and at this point almost felt like a second little brother. "Once I make plans with Wangji, I'll let you know when a few good days will be, and see if it fits your schedule."

Mingjue sighed and said, "I'll see how Friday goes and then see what I think. He's confusing, and I don't have enough data points."
His face lit up in a smile when Xichen expressed interest in coming over. He said, "It's been too long since I've had you over, so I'm glad we're fixing that."
He hesitated for just a second and said, "Any of the evenings that I'm not working, I'd be happy to have you over, it doesn't have to be just one day."
There had been times Mingjue had considered asking if Xichen just wanted to move into the two big house with him and Huaisang, to get a chance to be out of his Uncle's house for a while, and just to make it easy for the two of them to be around each other. It would have made it easier for Mingjue to check that Xichen was taking care of himself as well as everyone around him too. It just seemed like a weird thing for him to suggest to his best friend somehow. If Xichen had ever mentioned that he was looking for a different place to live, or something closer to campus, Mingjue would have offered it in a second, but he didn't want to make it a strange moment with his best friend.

Xichen let out a soft laugh and nodded, "Alright, that's fair." He agreed.
He smiled at Mingjue and nodded in agreement, "I am also relieved to get to spend more time with you. It's always nice."
"Hmm, in that case, I think it would be nice to stop by at least a few nights if it's alright. On Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, I have classes until about 6pm, which would be the perfect time to then have dinner at a friends' house, don't you think?"
He sometimes wondered if it would inconvenience Mingjue to let him move in with him, but of everyone currently living in the Lan household, besides his uncle, he was probably the most used to the rules of the house, though he could stand to argue Uncle could have handled his parent's death, and especially Wangji's reaction, in more than one lifetime. Besides, he had already stayed at home for his entire college career, now that he was in grad school, shouldn't he be like the others and branch out of his comfort zone? Not that Mingjue's house was necessarily out of his comfort zone, but it was definitely something he had never tried before. But to ask to move in was just plain rude.

Mingjue said, "I work Wednesday and Thursday evenings until kind of late, but Fridays absolutely work. If you wanted though, I can give you the extra key and you could come over Wednesdays and Thursdays too, especially if you think that you'd be around late enough to still be there when I got home."
He looked at Xichen contemplatively and said, "There's plenty of extra space if you ever need to stay over after studying. I don't know why my parents decided that they needed as much space as they did, but I'm closer to campus than you are, and no one is going to complain if you need to stay up late."
He added with a laugh, "I know Huaisang won't complain. He asks why you've not been over as often."

Xichen felt flustered at the offer, as despite it not being an invitation to flat out move in, being offered the extra key sure felt like an offer to move in. "Well, if I wouldn't be imposing on you or Huaisang, I definitely wouldn't mind taking you up on the offer. Even though Uncle lives close, you live closer, and sometimes I end up studying until ridiculous o'clock and then still have to drive home. Which, Uncle does not appreciate because no matter how quiet I am when I get home, it is apparently still too loud." He laughed lightly, "I cannot win, I suppose."

Mingjue grinned, thrilled that Xichen seemed to like the idea. It would be nice to have him there more often. He said, "And if you're ever still up and needing food when I get back from work, I always make dinner for myself then anyhow, so I'd be happy to cook you something too."
He laughed and said, "And neither Huaisang nor I will care about how late you have to be up. I'm not sure that Huaisang has ever actually figured out what a sleep schedule is that wasn't enforced by school hours, and I sleep heavily enough that you won't bother me."
He was excited enough by the idea that he said, "If you want, and have enough time before your next class, we can walk over and get you the key once we're both done eating here. I'll text Huaisang and let him know so that he won't be surprised if you're there in the evenings."
