Mingjue sighed at Meng Yao laughing at him, not entirely sure how to take it. He was pretty sure that Meng Yao wasn't trying to mock him in a cruel way, though perhaps to tease him. He sighed again and said, "That's just my face. I feel like I'm proving myself correct about not being a great conversationalist though."
He decided that since Meng Yao had actually commented on it, he would give the other man a few minutes to calm himself and figure out if he had anything else to say. They were about halfway to their destination, and while Mingjue was perfectly capable of driving in silence for that long, he had a sneaking suspicion that Meng Yao wouldn't be.

Meng Yao calmed himself down, "sorry, you know I'm not making fun of you, right? I genuinely find you adorable, and I'm just teasing you."
He looked down at his phone and changed the playlist again, no longer in the mood for film scores. He reverted back to the 70s and 80s R&B, playing Earth, Wind and Fire's 'September'.
"There's nothing wrong with silence, so long as it's a comfortable one," he shrugged, setting his phone back down and bopping his head a bit to the song, humming under his breath.

Mingjue's voice and posture both radiated disbelief as he said, "Adorable?"
He glanced at Meng Yao quickly when he got a chance during a turn, trying to gauge how serious the other man was in his comment. He had no idea.
He said, "I don't think that anyone has ever called me that before."
He really wasn't sure what he thought of it. He was tall and intimidating and had been too serious since he was a very young child. He also knew that he could have a bad temper in certain contexts. He didn't see how any of this could track to a word like adorable.
He definitely need Xichen's take on this man. Meng Yao was confusing, and Mingjue was not nearly equipped enough with people skills to make sense of him.

"Yes, adorable. Did I stutter?" Meng Yao asked, quirking an eyebrow. "Oh sure, you look stern and intimidating, and I suppose to most you could seem quiet and distant, but in this single car ride I've seen you be honest, open, earnest, funny, sarcastic and genuine."
He shrugged, "If people don't see what I see, that's their loss." He reached up to check to see that his bun was still secure, "also, maybe you just needed the right person to see certain things in you. I have been teasing you pretty relentlessly," he said, sticking his tongue out at the older man.

Mingjue didn't know how to respond to the praise from Meng Yao entirely. It was almost harder for him to judge than the earlier teasing tone. Some of the things that he said were things that Xichen had told him about himself. And some of them he fully believed. He cared about being honest, so that one wasn't strange or hard to hear. And he figured that he could believe earnest and genuine, and maybe even open, well enough. They sort of fell in line with serious and honest, where were things he knew about himself. Sarcastic, well that was something that he could admit to, though Meng Yao seemed to think that it was a good thing. He wasn't sure that he believed the funny though.
He was sure that his face was written over with evidence of his confusion at Meng Yao's explanation. There was a warmth to being told that someone liked his company and found it rewarding though. There were so few people that he spent time with, and the prospect of another one seemed nice, even if he wasn't entirely convinced of Meng Yao's motives yet.
He finally said softly, "Thank you."
Then muttered under his breath, "I think."
He wondered if maybe he should praise Meng Yao in turn, but he wasn't entirely sure what to say that he hadn't already said. He felt like Meng Yao had a much better read on him than he did on the other man.

"You're welcome," Meng Yao said, grinning and flashing dimples again. He turned his head to look out the window and continued humming softly, falling into a comfortable silence.
He knew he could fill the silence if he wanted, but he felt things were on a very good note right now, and knowing him, he'd stick his foot in it if he carried on. He enjoyed teasing and flirting and getting little rises out of Mingjue too much, he might end up stepping on a nerve, so he held his tongue.

Mingjue was a little bit relieved and a little bit disappointed at the silence. He hoped that Meng Yao had meant it when he'd said that he was OK with silence and lulls in conversation. Mingjue certainly did not know what to say next.
Meng Yao's humming was strangely familiar and pleasant. Mingjue certainly didn't mind the little reminder that he wasn't alone in the car.
Eventually, when they left the freeway, he told Meng Yao softly, "Make sure that I don't miss your place, OK? I've not spent a lot of time in Los Altos Hills, and sometimes some of the turn offs can be hard to spot."
He was pretty sure that the GPS would get him there without too much trouble. He was almost regretful that they were getting close to the end of the car ride, though there was a part of him that was relieved because he didn't want to stretch the silence out too long and let Meng Yao get bored. He wanted the chance to interact with the other man again.
He added, "I'll make sure to get back to you about schedules as soon as I'm home."

Meng Yao smiled, enjoying that earnest streak in Mingjue again. "I look forward to our future educational date," he teased.
He leaned forward and pointed to the right, "you can pull into the driveway," he said. He leaned down to gather the bag of dirty clothes and his leftovers. "Thank you for you ride, Mingjue-ge. I promise you I'm going to become familiar enough with you to earn that 'ge'" he flashed his dimples and chuckled.
He got out of the car and leaned back down, "I already have a car I'd like to work on, I wouldn't call it a junker, but I don't plan on using it as my main transport. So whenever you have time, I already have the car." He waved and started walking towards the house before pausing.
He came back to the window, grinning, "I'm still buying that apron, even if it's just a gag gift. Goodnight!" he said, waving and heading to the door with a smile, fishing his keys out of his pocket.

Mingjue hesitated over the word date, but he only said, "I'll look forward to it."
He pulled into the driveway carefully, wondering if Meng Yao actually meant it or if they would spend a while going back and forth about schedules and then just never arrange something. He thought that Meng Yao seemed sincere, but he wasn't always good about reading these things, and maybe the other man had just been playing a game. He hoped not.
He nodded and Meng Yao as he gathered his things and said, "Good night, rest well."
He was surprised when Meng Yao mentioned already having the car and said, "I'll look forward to seeing it then."
He only made a face at Meng Yao's insistence about the apron, and having said most of what he needed to say, waved to the other man as he head towards his building. He waited for Meng Yao to go inside before he pulled out of the driveway and put the GPS on taking him home.
He mulled over the evening, full of surprises. Meng Yao definitely seemed interested in getting to know him. Mingjue wasn't used to that, and he'd have to be sure that if they actually started interacting regularly, he introduced Xichen to the other man soon. He needed the sanity check about everything to do with Meng Yao. He had enjoyed interacting with the other man, and he thought that maybe there was the potential for friendship there, but they were so very different, and it scared Mingjue just a little bit.
It didn't take him long to get the rest of the way home. He started cooking and while things were simmering and he was waiting for the water to boil for noodles, he finally replied to Meng Yao's text: "I work Mon.-Thurs. nights, and events on weekends. I've got classes in the afternoons Mon.-Thurs. Most of my free time is Fri. and the weekend, generally afternoons & evenings."
He didn't know how that would work with Meng Yao's schedule considering he knew that the other man mostly took weekend shifts at the club. That was when there was more money in tips. He also carefully texted Xichen, though he knew that his best friend wouldn't see it until morning, telling him about his encounter with Meng Yao and that he'd tell him more when they saw each other next.

Meng Yao stepped out of the shower, toweled off and checked his phone. He plopped down on his bed, not bothering with clothes and grinned at Mingjue's texts. "Of course our schedules are completely opposite..." he sighed.
He texted back: "Fridays during the day are good for me. I just have to leave my place by 8pm to get to work on time. I'm also free Sundays, though I usually get a later start because of working late the night before."

Mingjue was surprised when his phone buzzed with a new text message right as he sat down to eat. Since he wasn't eating with anyone tonight, Huaisang had eaten hours ago, it didn't feel strange to go ahead and answer as he started eating his stir fry.
He nodded at Meng Yao's reply and quickly replied with, "How does Fri. noon sound? I can bring food if you want."
He didn't want to dither over schedules if there was something that worked for both of them. He figured that the earlier he could make it on a Friday, the less Meng Yao would be worried about needing to leave by eight.
He went back to eating his food, not sure if Meng Yao would respond again that night.

Meng Yao had set his phone down beside him on the bed and laid on his side to face it, waiting for it to buzz. "Oh no... get yourself together..." he admonished himself and turned away from the phone. Of course it decided to buzz then.
He turned quickly and read the text. He grinned to himself and replied: "Friday at noon it is! And I will never say no to free food!"
