He's very prone to following the lead of the people he trusts most (his mom, Mianmian, starting to include Yanli), and he is overall just very much willing to do whatever he can for the people he cares deeply for. He is also an incredibly anxious, uncertain person, who needs a fair amount of validation about just about anything, and doesn't really believe he's good at anything. He can come off as aloof or stuck up to people who haven't gotten to know him, but most of the time he's just too worried about how people might react to actually talk to them. the history father • Jin Guangshan, 52, CEO of an advertising company mother • Jin Meinuan (née Luo), 46, event planner younger half-brother • Meng Yao, 21, college student younger half-sister • Qin Su, 20*, college student* younger half-brother • Mo Xuanyu, 17*, high school student* cousin?*/younger half-brother?* (this is up for changing) • Jin Ling, 16*, high school student* cousin/best friend • Luo Qingyan (Mianmian), 22*, law student* cousin/basically least favorite person • Jin Zixun, 23*, manager at his dad's company fiancée • Jiang Yanli, 25, chef hometown • Atherton, CA, USA overall history • Zixuan is pretty sure that he didn't actually know what his father looked like up close until he was at least eight or nine years old, and even past that point, his father was always distant and more of a financial presence in his life than a personal one. He hated that his father was very dismissive of his mother. Growing up, he was very close to his mother and his best friend (and cousin) who was the same age as him, and thus his main childhood playmate. Zixuan did not thrive in school. He was shy, awkward, and panicked easily, basically spending all of elementary school hiding behind Mianmian. Middle and high school were a little bit better because Zixuan did sports (namely basketball and tennis), but he still did a lot of hiding behind Mianmian (less effectively now because he was notably taller than she was). Zixuan was a pretty dutiful kid though, trying his best to always do what his parents set as expectations, though mostly wanting to do what his mother told him to. He was definitely a follower in most situations. His mother always told him that he was going to marry Yanli, and so he just sort of expected that that would be a thing at some point, though it made him horrifically nervous: what if somehow he turned out to be like his father when presented with a planned out for him marriage. He desperately and absolutely wants to be nothing like his father. A major turning point of his life was not getting into any of the universities his parents had planned for him to attend, especially, not getting into Stanford. He ended up attending Menlo College after having done middle and high school at Menlo School, so it was very much his safety school. Even with the comfortable to him environment and not having to leave home, he still had a tumultuous freshman year, horribly bombing his communications class his freshman year and having to drop from the business program. He ended up in accounting, where he was much happier. Numbers made sense and didn't need him to talk to them. Between his junior and senior years, he worked for his dad's company over the summer, and managed to accidentally uncover a notable money scandal in his father's books, which he of course, being a responsible person, reported to the company lawyers in a panic. He has been kind of watching things go nuts with his family around him in the past two years because of it (his mother threatening to divorce his father, his father being required to pay what is basically considered a debt to all his illegitimate kids, discovering he had a bunch of siblings and trying to track the down so that they make sure to get the money that his dad owes them even if it's somewhat uncomfortable, and oh he wants siblings). In the midst of all this, with him graduating and not being given a job at his father's company which had always been the plan, his mother and Yanli's mother decided that they were going to set the two of them up to trial run living together in a one bedroom apartment now that Zixuan was done with school. His mom told him to, so Zixuan is going to do it, but he is incredibly nervous, and doesn't know that this is a good idea (what if it leads to Yanli hating his guts?). He adores Yanli, but doesn't really know how to show it, and he's very very bad about blurting out stupid shit. He's also pretty sure that Yanli thinks that he only wants to marry her because his mom said he should, but he doesn't know how to show her that's not true. He hopes that spending more time together will allow her to actually get to know him better. He ends up calling Mianmian for advice a lot, much to Mianmian's amusement. The apartment is a large one bedroom, with an office, so Zixuan has made the office his bedroom and told Yanli that he will never go into the bedroom without her permission because he's trying to make sure that she is respected and has as many boundaries as she's allowed. He is very awkwardly trying to actually court her, even though they're kind of engaged? He's a little bit confused about how all this is supposed to work. He managed to land an accounting job with a non-profit that supports homeless and at risk youth and families, and it's pretty much one of the things he's the most proud of that he's ever done, and it feels kind of like it's directly working to undo some of the types of bad stuff his father did. But it's also in his skill set, and the people at work are actually really nice and willing to give him social space and talk quietly and include him in things in a low pressure way. He's still really shy with them, but he actually loves what he is doing, even if his father sneers at him about it (not that there's much his father isn't sneering at him about these days). He hates that he's technically still heir to his father's company, but he thinks that there's a pretty good chance that that's going to end up going to his cousin Zixun (who works for the company and actually likes it) at some point, and he doesn't actually mind that. He's certainly not cut out to be in charge of anyone (though he kind of wishes that he could just like take the company apart and give everything from it to his half-siblings instead of just making sure that they get the one time (albeit big) payment). the role player alias • Etienne age • 30 pronouns • he/him code • chenqing which version did you see • novel/drama other characters • Lan Wangji, Lan Jingyi, Nie Mingjue |
