Meng Yao laughed, "why are my questions confusing you today? You should see your face," he was holding his stomach now.
Once he calmed down a little he asked, "are my questions weird?"
He was very happy he'd taken this walk with Mingjue. Not only had it given him the opportunity to procrastinate, but it'd given him some more time to process what had happened to him in a safe place, which in this case translated to with a person who made him feel safe.

Mingjue shrugged, smiling a little bit along with Meng Yao's laughter. He replied, "I guess I just wasn't entirely sure what you were asking, or what you wanted to know by asking. I'm not used to talking to people who don't already know me very well outside of much more specific structures like class or work, where I have mental scripts for types of conversations, so your questions probably aren't weird, though I wouldn't know, I just don't have a mental map for them."
He hoped that that made sense to Meng Yao.
He was glad to see Meng Yao looking more relaxed and at ease. He thought over what he knew about having conversations and how that was supposed to go. Finally, he asked, "Do you like animals? Of any particular type?"

Meng Yao nodded, "I suppose based on what you've told me that questions about animals things like that don't come up often. It sucks more people don't try to get to know you. You're a good friend."
He patted the bench next to him, "I've never been a big animal person. Though I find myself liking rodents, especially mice and rats. Let's not examine where that like came from," he said.
He sat quietly for a minute, debating what other questions to ask that might not be part of Mingjue's mental scripts. "Favorite color?"

Mingjue shrugged and said, "Mice and rats, and rodents in general are smart and resourceful and good problem solvers. They're also very sociable and often cuddly and can make good pets, while not requiring a huge amount of space. Which I'm guessing is not the implication you were trying to make, but that's the one that I take away from it."
Mingjue sat down next to Meng Yao, carefully respecting the other man's space, but curious to see if Meng Yao would decide to infiltrate his own. He didn't mind the idea, but that was a boundary that Meng Yao had clearly been considering the margins of.
He was a little startled by Meng Yao's question, partially because it seemed like a random topic shift, but then it occurred to him that these were "get to know you" sorts of questions. He replied, "Green and yellow, they're the Nie family colors, so I wore them a lot as a kid and it stuck. You?"

Meng Yao shook his head, "you're unbelievable. How do you just have nice and happy things to say when people are being down on themselves?" He scoffed at himself. "I told you I grew up essentially in a whorehouse. Not very clean or well kept, so we had mice and rats. I got along with them, maybe even related to them a little. But how did you turn that into they're smart and resourceful and good problem solvers? Now I feel like you're describing me."
He had covered his face with his hand while talking and now peeked over at Mingjue. "You have family colors? Why? I genuinely don't know what that's supposed to mean or represent." He hoped he hadn't come off as offensive. He really was just looking for more information. "Though that would explain the yellow and green flannels," he said with a warm smile.
"I don't have a favorite color. There are colors I look good in and ones I don't, but I don't feel any particular way about colors." Meng Yao said, knowing his psychology professor would probably call him a sociopath with an answer like that.

Mingjue leaned back on the bench a little, trying to make sure that his posture didn't read as standoffish. He shook his head and said, "Part of the reason that mice and rats can be pests the way they are is that they're clever and resourceful. It's hard to design to keep them out of the dry place with the food. But it's also what makes them good pets when they're well cared for. It doesn't surprise me that if you were patient about it you were able to befriend them, even if there are ways it might not have been the wisest decision."
He thought for a moment longer and said, "It's a good feeling to make someone feel a little better or happier. It means that I was able to help in some way. Even if just a little. So I try to if I can."
Mingjue shrugged about the family colors and said, "It's mostly just a bit of family trivia now, but several of my Nie ancestors going back a ways were some sort of fairly big time warlords. So they had clan colors and stuff. These days I guess it stuck around in the family in some weird little family traditions, like the kids keeping their hair long until they're about ten, longer if they want, learning martial arts, and everything being green and yellow. And I like the colors, so I just kind of kept on wearing them, it makes choosing things easier."

Meng Yao shook his head regarding the rats, "now you might be insulting me," he teased and poked Mingjue's arm.
He turned towards the other man and propped his arm up on the back of the bench, leaning his head on that. "Family traditions sound nice. Stuff you did with your parents? Like family dinner on Sundays or something?" He wanted to know more about Mingjue, but knew he was straying into uncharted territory. "What's one of your favorite memories with your family?"

Mingjue stilled and looked at Meng Yao, considering. He felt like this might be dangerous conversational territory. He knew that it could be emotional for him, but he also felt OK talking about it. He had gotten the impression that Meng Yao had complex feelings about families though.
He tried his best to keep his reply calm and open though, "We weren't a very social sort of family. Huaisang is the most social, but when our parents were still alive, he was still younger, though he always did have more friends over than I ever had. But we did do things together. We went to temple pretty often, though I'm more sporadic about that now. I started learning martial arts from dad right about when I learned to walk. My favorite memories are probably learning to cook from my stepmom though."
He had probably been the closest to Huaisang's mom of any of his parent figures, especially after Huaisang had been born and he'd immediately adored his baby brother. He had always been able to be quiet around his stepmom though, and she was the one who gently suggested that he do things like volunteer to teach kids martial arts classes or try robotics.

Meng Yao couldn't help but smile when Mingjue talked about his family. "Not being a social family doesn't change the fact that you love each other."
He reached out and gave Mingjue's shoulder a squeeze, "thank you fo sharing that with me. I know you didn't have to, so thank you for trusting me with that." He knew he himself tended to use his family as either a weapon or a shield, but it was always nice to see when someone truly loved their family.

Mingjue considered it for a moment and then asked, "I won't ask about family memories, but have you got any fond memories, or nostalgic? A little bittersweet? That you'd want to share?"
He felt like he'd flubbed the question a little bit, but he wanted this to be a back and forth, not just one of them asking and one of them answering. He was trying to think of the right question, but he wasn't sure that there was a right question.
He looked away, mildly embarrassed, and said, "I'm sorry, that didn't come out right. What would be the right question to ask you to be doing a good job of socializing?"

Meng Yao waved off the question. "I've got no happy memories other than ones that directly include me being superior to people I felt have wronged me. Even those I'm learning weren't really good memories."
He scrunched up his nose at Mingjue's final question. "Not that, for sure. Saying that you want to know what you should be asking makes me feel like a project. Like you don't want to ask or know anything but are doing it out of a sense of obligation. If you want to know something, ask. Otherwise you don't have to ask anything."

Mingjue sighed and said, "I want to learn more about you, but I don't want to ask a question that you're uncomfortable with. You've seemed to know what questions to ask me, but I was pretty sure that I couldn't just echo that one back."
He grumbled to himself, "I have insufficient practice making friends."
He shook his head and added, "I don't see you as a project. I see you as a friend, who I want to know more about, but I've known my only other friend since high school, and he basically knows everything about me, and learned a lot of it while it was happening, so I don't really know what is appropriate or right to ask, or even what would be useful to ask. I think that now I'm starting to sound like the one who should be someone's project for teaching how to make friends."
He shook his head at himself again. Hoping that Meng Yao would hear where he was coming from in his disjointed explanation.

"Ask things that make me uncomfortable. I give you permission to," Meng Yao said. "I know better now. Last time I said it was highly unlikely you'd find me out of my element and the next time I saw you I was shaken like a baby's rattle. So I'm no longer going to claim you can't make me uncomfortable or rattle me," he paused, correcting himself, "you did not make me uncomfortable or rattle me that time, the situation did. What I mean is, if you ask, I'll try to answer."
He shook his head, "you're not a project. And we don't have to know everything about each other right now. I'm happy to hear you call me your friend though," he was smiling. "There was a silver lining in that whole ordeal, I think it helped us skip a few layers and settle on something a little deeper."
"If you really want to know about my childhood I'll tell you, but it'll likely be the CliffNotes version and it won't be pretty," he said with a shrug.

Mingjue shook his head and said, "That doesn't mean I want to make you uncomfortable."
He added seriously, "I will listen if you want to tell me, but I don't want to pry into details that you are not ready or wanting to share. From what you've said, I believe it wasn't a pleasant childhood in many ways. I don't want to make you dig into that if you don't want to."
He continued, "I don't think that we need to know everything about each other. I'm just struggling with conversations I guess. Not really my strength."
A thought came to him based on a conversation that he'd had with Xichen, and he asked, "How do you feel about camping?"

Meng Yao was mentally putting together an itemized version of his childhood when Mingjue asked about camping. He couldn't help but laugh.
"Do I look like I camp?" he gestured to himself in his skin tight jeans, top and jacket. "I would make a terrible camping companion, but if you're inviting me, I'm so there." He shifted so he was sitting cross legged on the bench.
"You know you're like my new experience guru. If you say camp, I camp." He grinned and reached over, picking a hair off Mingjue's shirt and letting it fall to the ground.
