Mingjue was quiet at first as he led the way, trusting Meng Yao to follow him. He was surprised when Meng Yao brought it up more directly. He shook his head and said, "They haven't asked me anything further, though the boss did tell me that there had been enough witnesses to his behavior that night that it probably wouldn't come up until it went to court."
Since they were talking about it, he said, "How have you been? I don't want to pry, but I also don't want to leave you alone to wallow in it if I could help. Uh, other than the paper being too much too soon."

Meng Yao shrugged, "would you believe me if I told you I've had lots of meaningless sex in the past few days to try and feel like I was restoring the power I felt I'd lost?"
He scoffed at himself and rolled his neck around. "That's choice number one. Choice number two is me sitting on my couch eating ice cream wrapped up in your sweater and watching horror films. Which one do you think I've been doing?"

Mingjue shrugged and said, "I mean, choice number two makes more sense to me, since I've got no interest in sex, though granted, I also don't like horror films, so neither of them sound particularly appealing as coping mechanisms. You are more interested in both of those things than I am though, so depending on how you said them, I could believe either."
He paused for a moment, going over the way Meng Yao had been acting and what he'd said, "I'm guessing from what you've said and how you phrased that, that you'd see choice number one as the 'cool' option that you'd want someone to believe and choice number two is the more honest one, though I could have missed something there."
His tone turned reassuring as he said, "I'm not going to judge you for either though. You should do what works for you. I can also bring you over to use my punching bag at some point if you think that would help."

"Oooo," Meng Yao was intrigued by the idea of a punching bag. Beating the crap out of something sounded nice.
"Choice one is what I would normally do, especially before I started my degree. Now I know all the mental bullshit behind it and I can't really bring myself to do such things anymore. Okay, as frequently. Choice two is what I've been embracing. Which is why I need a refresher sweater. Plus I'm regaining my lost sense of power by yelling at stupid people in horror films." He explained.
"I like the idea of a punching bag though. Teach me?" he asked, "on top of that, now I want to watch a scary movie with you. Why don't you like scary movies?" He was happy they'd slipped back into comfortable banter.

Mingjue nodded and said, "If you want to come over on Saturday afternoon before you go to work, I can show you how to use the punching bag. I've got uh big kick pads and stuff too if you think that chasing around a person would be more interesting."
Mingjue shrugged about the scary movies and said, "A lot of horror films are either gross, or have people getting themselves in trouble by being needlessly stupid, or both. I don't watch a lot of movies to begin with, so movies that are either gross or frustrating don't tend to be high my list."
He wondered if he was perhaps being too pragmatic for what horror films were meant for. He'd never really had anyone want to watch them with him though, so maybe that was more entertaining.

Meng Yao smiled to himself, happy to see that he now apparently was welcome in Mingjue's home. He felt like they'd move up a level in their friendship. It wasn't how either of them had expected or wanted it, but nonetheless, it happened.
"Who am I chasing? You?" he laughed.
"And yes, that's the point of horror. You yell at the stupid people and tell them what they should be doing instead. You also start to root for the murderer or bad guy when the stupid people get too stupid. Really most horror films I end up rooting for the bad guy." He reached out and grabbed Mingjue's shirt at his elbow, just barely holding onto it. "Would you watch one with me?"

Mingjue nodded and said, "Yeah, you'd be chasing me."
He thought about Meng Yao's explanation of horror films and shook his head. He said, "I still don't think that I get it. I don't want them to die, and I don't really feel like rooting for the killer pretty much ever. Just want the situation to be less stupid."
He paused for a moment, realizing that he sounded like he was rejecting Meng Yao's suggestion, and he said, "But I'd watch one with you if you wanted, as long as you picked one that wasn't high on the gross factor."
He pointed to their turn off as they approached it and said, "The Arizona Garden is just through here. If we were going to Arboretum, we'd keep going this way."

"Let's start with a static target before I start chasing and hitting things," Meng Yao laughed.
"I can pick something low on gross factor. What do you consider gross? How about something like paranormal horror? Big on creep factor, usually low on gore."
He was excited to see this garden. He honestly hadn't even known the gardens existed, and if they were as pretty and calm as Mingjue said, then maybe they'd be a place for him to study in the future. They were pretty far from coffee though, that might be a problem.

Mingjue nodded and said, "That is reasonable enough, though I've taught people far less coordinated than you to spar. You know where your feet and hands are, and that's half the battle."
Mingjue thought about it, and finally noticed Meng Yao's hand that had touched his arm. He patted the hand lightly, trying to be reassuring, and said, "Paranormal could probably work. I can't promise that I'll enjoy the film, but I'll like doing something with you and seeing what you like. I will try to go into it with an open mind."
He was pretty sure that he'd just end up paying attention to Meng Yao's enjoyment of it.
The gardens were a quiet place, artfully arranged with paths winding through cacti and succulents planted by region with little discreet informative plaques. Mingjue had read most of them one time or another. He liked walking through here, but there were some seating areas scattered throughout in areas where they had at least some privacy, though unlike the arboretum or the groves nearby, there was less natural cover here, other than some provided by rock formations that had been placed throughout the garden. It was always interesting to see what sorts of birds he'd spot, and once, when he'd wandered through after sunset, he'd seen a bat, which had been cool.

Meng Yao thought about it. He'd never really thought much about people being unaware of their own limbs, "who was so uncoordinated?"
He smiled when Mingjue patted his hand. He'd wondered when the other man would notice and how he'd react. He knew Mingjue wasn't the biggest fan of physical contact, which is why he'd barely held onto his sleeve rather than his actual arm. He felt warmth spread in his chest at the reassuring touch. "So you're not scared of horror films, you just don't really watch movies?" he clarified.
Meng Yao looked around at the garden. It was pretty and indeed quiet. He could tell Mingjue saw something very different than most when he came here, so he was enjoying watching the other man's face over the surroundings.

Mingjue chuckled and said, "My little brother for one, though he was never really that enthusiastic about learning martial arts. But at least half of the teenagers any time I've volunteer taught classes for them. They are enthusiastic at least. Just not necessarily coordinated."
Mingjue nodded at Meng Yao's assessment and said, "That's about right. I like watching some martial arts and historical films, but I don't watch a ton of films. And horror is pretty low on my list of things to pick up because it's often gross. But it doesn't scare me. There are plenty of things that scare me, they just don't tend to be through a screen."
He pointed out a bird that had come to sit on one of the more tree-like cacti and said, "Stellar's jay."

Meng Yao stifled his laughter at the idea of Mingjue teaching a hoard of uncoordinated teens. "What sort of martial arts do you do?"
He was curious what did scare Mingjue if not scary movies, but decided against asking the question. He didn't want to push him. Plus, he thought he knew a few of his fears already, like letting people in or fear of abandonment.
Meng Yao was surprised when Mingjue named the bird, "I didn't take you for a bird watcher," he said, looking at the bird to try and see how it managed to not get pricked by the cactus.

Mingjue wasn't sure why he was a little surprised that Meng Yao asked about the style of martial arts he did. He replied readily enough, "I've studied several styles, but Bājíquán is the main one that I practice. Though I also try to regularly practice Tàijí quán because it is good to balance an internal style with an external one."
He was curious to see what Meng Yao would ask, assume, or know based on that explanation.
Mingjue shrugged and said, "I'm not particularly a bird watcher, but I like animals, and Huaisang is particularly fond of birds, so I can identify a good number of the ones that are common around here. If it had been one that I didn't recognize, I probably still would have pointed it out and just called it a cool bird or something."
[[OOC: Bājíquán is this style of wushu; Tàijí quán is often just romanized as Tai Chi]]

Meng Yao nodded, "you make me ask things about things I know nothing about." He chuckled at himself a little, "I think that speaks volumes about your character."
"I've never even heard of Bājíquán, but based on knowing you, and the skills I've seen you use, especially when subduing people, I'd guess powerful but small, controlled movements. Something that would allow you to protect someone, while at the same time not intimidate them." He walked over to a bench and sat down. "Like how you made sure that guy let go of my hair before you pulled him away. I was genuinely expecting to lose hair that night, so thanks."
He watched the bird as it fluttered to another plant, "what sort of animals?"

Mingjue nodded at Meng Yao's assessment and said, "It is a style of wushu focused on fast, powerful movements that lend themselves to subduing an opponent in one strike or movement. It has a reputation as a body guarding style. I've found that it suits being a bouncer well. I've studied quite a few other styles as well though, so I've picked up techniques from them and incorporated them into my personal style."
He was slightly baffled by Meng Yao's question about what sorts of animals he liked. He replied, trying to answer seriously but uncertainty clear in his tone, "I like pretty much all animals. They all have a place and purpose in the world, and that's interesting, and seeing how animals impact and inhabit their environments is a fascinating intersection with human design, especially human design that interacts well with the environment."
He felt like he'd probably gone in a different direction with that than Meng Yao had actually been asking, but it was at least a truthful answer.
