((This thread is backdated to January 2020) Yanli put her hands on her hips and turned in a slow circle, looking at all the boxes in her new apartment. Her family had been helpful enough to help bring all the boxes in but had been suspiciously busy when in came to unpacking. "Where do I even start?" she muttered to herself. She wandered back to the bedroom and into the closet where her boxes of clothes were. "I guess here's as good as any place," she said. She fished out a pair of headphones and started a workout playlist, something to keep her moving. Before she knew it, she'd already unpacked all her clothes with no sign of her "new roommate." She was nervous to move in with Zixuan. She'd lived with boys before so she wasn't worried about that, but never a partner. Were they partners? She shook her head, annoyed at the constant confusion. It'd been two hours since she started unpacking and still no sign of him, was she going to be living alone after all? She went out to the living room, trying to choose what to unpack next. She went for what she really wanted to do, the kitchen. Being a chef, she had a particular way she liked her kitchen set up, and that varied in each kitchen. She stood in the middle of the kitchen, facing the sink, and closed her eyes. She visualized what things she'd be cooking and what she'd need for those things. "There you are," she said to herself, opening her eyes as she finished mentally putting together the kitchen. She started opening boxes and cabinets, putting things away, pausing only for dance breaks which had to be danced in full force. She'd most definitely forgotten that she wasn't going to be living alone. Jin Zixuan

Zixuan's mother had taken him with her to one of the early viewings of the apartment before they bought it, so he'd seen the layout and knew where it was, and she'd shown him the layout of furniture that she and Yanli's mother had chosen. And Zixuan had been stressed out. It had been a few years since he'd really even seen Yanli because she'd been abroad, and he still really liked her, she was someone who was clearly a wonderful, amazing person, and he was pretty sure that she thought he was just willing to be engaged to her because his mom told him to.
There was no way he was forcing her to share a room with him, and he'd asked Mianmian about it, and she'd agreed with him, so once all of his things were loaded into his car instead of going straight to the apartment, he'd taken a detour to IKEA. IKEA was overwhelming, but after having to frantically call Mianmian to help him figure it out between her exams and about an hour longer than he felt like it should have taken, he'd emerged with a mattress that was a decent approximation of a futon along with sheets for it that he wouldn't have remembered if Mianmian hadn't reminded him and a curtain with a spring mounted rod that could be used to cover the office door. It wasn't perfect, but it would do.
He had to drive around the apartment complex three times before he could calm down enough to convince himself to park and start bringing his stuff up. He knew that he was already late, but that somehow made it worse. He wasn't sure if he was hoping that Yanli would have people there helping her unpack or not. On the one hand, more people meant that he wouldn't be expected to do as much talking, probably. On the other hand, Yanli's mother would probably not look entirely kindly on him re-purposing the office as his bedroom.
He grabbed the mattress with its sheets and the curtain with its rod, since they were on top of everything else, and he headed up the stairs to their apartment. He was sure that there was an elevator somewhere in a building this nice, but he didn't know where it was, and he seemed less likely to run into strangers on the stairs.
He let himself in, trying to take deep, calming breaths which only sort of helped, and called out, "Hello? Yanli? I'm sorry I'm late."

Yanli was in the middle of shuffling with a wok in her arms when Zixuan walked in. Unfortunately, her music was too loud and she was too into it to even notice the door had opened.
She slid her way into the kitchen murmuring along to "What is Love" by Haddaway. By now, she unpacked all the pots and pans and placed them on the floor in the kitchen. She opened the cabinets and began arranging things, practically crawling into the cabinets at times.

Zixuan could hear someone, he hoped Yanli, doing what sounded like rearranging the kitchen. He tentatively walked far enough through the entryway that he could see into the kitchen, still awkwardly clutching the rolled up mattress and other things in his arms. He waited until Yanli seemed to be turning towards him, hoping that she wasn't angry at him for being there or being late.
She was wearing headphones though, so maybe she'd just not heard him. He was glad that she seemed to be settling in to the apartment. When she looked his way, he tentatively said, "Hi Yanli?"
He chewed on his lip, hoping that this wouldn't be too awkward, but knowing that it was him, so it probably would be too awkward. Yanli was amazing though, so maybe she'd be enough to make it less awkward.

Yanli crawled out of a cabinet, reaching back for another pot but it was out of reach. She turned to see where it was and instead saw Zixuan. She squeaked in surprise and pulled out her headphones.
"How long have you been there?" she asked, standing up and moving towards him. He looked like a lost child clutching his blanket and other things. "Here, let me help," she said, grabbing the blanket, sheets and awkwardly trying to take the curtain rod as well.
"Did you have trouble finding the place?" she asked, walking the things towards the bedroom, assuming that was where they'd go. Their mother's had bought a king size bed, so though she wasn't too sure how she felt about sharing a bed with Zixuan, she was at least happy it was a large bed.

Zixuan squeaked, "I just got here!"
He tried to hold on to his things, especially when she started walking the wrong way, and babbled, "No, it's OK, I know where to put them, I just. I'm not going to invade your privacy by making you share a room with me, so I had to go stop and get things so that I could actually sleep in the office so, um, curtain because no door and thing to sleep on. I know that it was our mom's ideas, and I never really got to hear if you had a say, and Mianmian said that you should get the bedroom, so I'm not going to sleep in there until or unless you want me to and we're both comfortable with it. But our moms had other ideas, and I don't know why they thought it was a good idea."
He hid his face behind the mattress and turned to carry it towards the office, not sure if his voice, as high pitched and babbly as it had come out had made any real sense. He hoped that Yanli would understand. He was glad that there was enough space in the office even with the desk and chair that were in there for him to put down the mattress, even if he wasn't sure that there would be enough space to roll it out until he'd moved a few things.

Yanli paused, a little confused until Zixuan finished explaining himself. She felt her cheeks flush a little when he mentioned a future time when she might want him to sleep in bed with her. "Thank you," she said quietly, following him to the office.
"We can see if we can get a door, or maybe one of those screen room dividers. I don't want you to have no privacy at all," she said, placing the blanket and sheets down.
"Do you need a home office? I don't. So maybe we could remove the desk and other furniture and just make it a second bedroom?" she offered. She leaned against the entryway, "can I help you bring the rest of your things up?"

He nodded and said in a small voice, "That would be nice, a curtain was just what I could find to start off. I didn't tell my mom that I was doing that because she might have tried to stop me or something, or told me I was being silly."
He shook his head and said, sounding a little more confident, "I definitely don't need a home office. It's not like I'm working for dad's company, and any work that comes home with me, I can do on my laptop. Maybe we can find other places for some of the furniture, but if we need to just get rid of it, work would absolutely take it as donations for people who needed stuff like this, and it would be in nicer shape than most of the stuff they get."
He hesitated at her offer and said, "I don't want to make you lift more things if you don't want to, I know you had to move your own stuff up, but I would like the company, and maybe we can figure out where some things go together? I know I'm nowhere near as good a cook as you, but I did bring some of my own cooking stuff, and I don't know what I have that would be useful to even keep or not."
Most of what was down in his car was clothes and his various personal possessions, including several stuffed animals that he was vaguely embarrassed about, but would have considered it crushing not to bring, and Mianmian had insisted that Yanli wouldn't give him a hard time about it. There was definitely a part of him that wanted to make sure that everything in the apartment was exactly the way Yanli wanted it so that she wouldn't want to move out, and maybe he'd finally figure out how to have a proper conversation with her instead of stumbling over his words constantly.

Yanli smiled brightly, "I like the idea of donating it. I don't need a desk either. You work for a non-profit, right? With the homeless? I think donating it there would be great." She was actually very impressed with how Zixuan had decided to strike out on his own and make his own path away from his father. She felt she'd done the same thing with cooking.
She opened the front door, "I'm happy to keep you company, but I'll help you carry things, I'd feel useless otherwise," she said stepping into the hallway.
"Oh dearie, I'm so glad your husband arrived. I was worried you'd have to unpack that whole place all by yourself," a pleasant older woman said in a Southern drawl.
Yanli stopped and smiled, "You must be Mary-Lou, my mother's told me about you," she said, sweeping the little old lady into a hug.
"I am, and you must be Yanli. This is your husband, Zixuan, right? We're so happy to have you in the neighborhood," Mary-Lou said, not giving Yanli enough time to step in and correct her.

Zixuan nodded and said, "Homeless and at risk youths and families, and yeah, I'm sure that there's someone out there who could use it way more and better than I ever would. I can probably get work to let me bring over the donation van if it will return full of furniture and anything that we have silly duplicates of."
Work was one of the things that he could actually have a semi-coherent conversation about. The feeling of being good at what he did, and it helping and being rewarded with praise at work was very satisfying, and it had been one of the few things that had been actually a good part of the past year or so. Moving out of his father's house was such a relief that he could almost forgive the way their moms had decided it was going to happen.
He smiled a little bit at her, clearly uncertain and said, "I won't stop you from carrying things if you want to. I'm just also not going to make you carry my stuff if you don't want to, it's my responsibility."
When they were accosted by the older woman, Zixuan shrank behind Yanli a bit, wishing that he was still holding something that he could hide behind instead of towering awkwardly behind her. He started to turn red at her assumptions, but his voice cracked and faltered as he managed to get out, "Fiancé..."
His mother hadn't said anything about a nosy neighbor, probably because she knew that he would have been even more hesitant, even though it wasn't like he'd put up an actual objection when he'd told her to move in with Yanli.

Yanli was happy the Zixuan seemed to be coming out of his shell a little, especially when he spoke about work. "We should go through the house and donate anything we don't think we'll need."
"I know they're your things but if I had come late and hadn't moved any of my things in, would you say that it was my responsibility and not help?" She didn't even wait for him to answer before tapping his nose and saying, "nope, that's what I thought."
She felt herself flush, she had no idea why she'd just done that. Was she flirting? Did she know how to flirt? What was happening here?
In the hallway she felt Zixuan wither behind her under the onslaught of the chatty Mary-Lou. She reached behind herself and grabbed his arm, pulling him up beside her and looping her arm in his, "Zixuan is my fiancé," she correct Mary-Lou.
Mary-Lou hummed in disapproval, "you'll be married soon enough. Two young people, living together, I think you'll find the house won't be big enough for you in a year's time. Not with a baby on the way."
Yanli blinked, stunned into silence.
"I-I... Sorry ma'am, w-we need to move the rest of our things into the apartment. It was nice meeting you," she barely managed, pulling Zixuan past the nosy neighbor. She knew her face was blazing red by now.

Zixuan flushed bright red, and then turned quite pale in close succession, very glad for Yanli to be leading him away because under his own power, he wasn't sure how he would have handled it other than to freeze and stare like a deer in the headlights. He managed to croak out, "W-what ideas did she get from our moms? How? Why?"
He looked at Yanli and said shakily, "Thank you, for handling that, I'm sorry she was like that."
He was glad for the distraction of getting to his car, which he pointed out as soon as they got down. It was a reasonably sized Subaru that had been large enough to easily carry all his things, and he took a certain degree of joy in the fact that his father deeply disapproved of how practical and plain a car it was. He said, "I think that this should only take a few trips, and then we can start figuring out what we can donate."
He hesitated and asked, "Do you think that we're going to have to deal with her again?"
All of the boxes were carefully labeled in either his or Mianmian's handwriting because she'd come over with her studying one night to help him with packing and had helped him label boxes when she took a break. There was one box in there labeled by his mother that he was terrified of opening because she'd said that it was things that he'd need once he was living with Yanli, and he had no idea what that meant. He said, "The heavy stuff is on the bottom so it wouldn't crush anything else, but the labels should be pretty easy to follow."

Yanli covered her face, "I don't know what our mothers did," she said, trying to cool her face down. "I don't know if I did handle it, she probably will still be up there. Just pretend the boxes we're carrying are really heavy, then hopefully she won't stop us," she plotted.
Yanli stacked two boxes and topped it with a stuffed husky. "He's cute," she said, smiling at Zixuan. She headed back upstairs, making sure to stay close to Zixuan so he didn't get caught alone by Mary-Lou again. Luckily, she'd gone back inside.
"I left half the closet empty, so if you've got any boxes of clothes, we can put those in there," she said as she opened the door to the apartment.

Zixuan blushed again when Yanli commented on the husky, but this time, it was accompanied with a small smile. He stuttered out, "Thanks, I've had him since I was seven. It didn't seem right to not bring him."
He was hugely relieved when the neighbor wasn't still out and about, though he wondered if she was watching the two of them. He had the mortifying thought that their mothers might have recruited her to spy on them. He shuddered slightly but didn't mention the concern to Yanli, not wanting to make her more uncomfortable.
He hesitated over her comment about putting clothes in the closet for the bedroom, especially since he'd said he wouldn't go in there. He said softly, "There's the coat closet and some hanging area in the laundry room. Until we can figure out a closet set up for the den for me, I can just have my clothes out there so that they aren't in your space."

"It's good you brought him with you then, he's been with you for so long," Yanli smiled warmly.
"Zixuan, you're going to make me feel guilty. You're already staying on a futon in a cramped office, you've already talked about throwing away your kitchen things, the least you could do is not make the closet look so empty. Besides," she said, opening the door to the bathroom and showing the pocket door, "you can come in here without really going into the room. Maybe we can buy a second screen divider so you don't have to feel like you're intruding."
She was torn. She appreciated how attentive he was being to her comfort level, but she was bothered that he seemed to be completely disregarding his own. "This is your new house too. Please make yourself at home."
